Edit: Well... in case anybody cares... the game is broken for AMD 7000 series card users. Now I really feel like I got robbed.

(Correction: DX11 mode might the only thing broken. Reading through the thread now and just tried a battle where it would bring me to desktop or crash the driver... and it seems ok so far.)

So when the movies start at the beginning they'll play for a while and then it'll quit to the desktop. I can click the application and get back into it and again it'll keep playing, but after a random amount of time... switch back to the desktop.

Same thing during ANY movies in game. they'll start up and then quit back to the desktop. It happens randomly during gameplay too.

I was just playing one of the tutorials and it seems that crossfire stops functioning at some point also. My frame rate gets cut in half... Empire was so crap with performance too... I feel robbed!

Anyone have suggestions on a fix?

Yeah, don't assume it's your cards that're causing the problems. Also, if you have to disable crossfire you should still be able to max out that game, it's more CPU driven than GPU, what with all of the AI and pathing calculations being done. Oh, and it's not just the 7000 series. I had serious problems with my 6870, and I have no idea what I did to fix it because by the time I got done I had disemboweled the game (and windows) and stitched it's mutilated torso back together with wiregrass.

I could max out the game fairly smoothly on a single 6870. If you can't do it with one 7970, there's something else going on.

Are you talking about DX11 or 9?

I can run crossfire and it's fine with it in DX9... I get 287 fps average in the benchmark. The problem with DX11 is that the window loses focus randomly and it also seems to crash the driver. I have not tried turning off CF. I will try that now.

Maxed out Shogun 2 ultra DX11 with no problems on my 7970. As for your problems I have no idea other than starting with verifying integrity of game cache. Maybe a file became corrupted.

It sounds like the radtools bink dll may be corrupted if any of the videos cause it to panic. rename the game directory and let steam redownload it so you can start from scratch. I don't think it's your video card.

EDIT: If that doesn't work I would completely uninstall drivers. Run the catalyst uninstall manager removing all AMD software, reboot, it'll still try to use an AMD provided driver, so go to control panel and manually uninstall that driver and make sure it's deleted (right click on adapter, properties, driver tab, uninstall, check delete box). Reboot yet again, and you're ready to reinstall driver. God I don't miss AMD drivers lol.

I gave my borrowed copy of it back a good while ago, but if it goes back on sale anytime soon I'll pick it up again and do some investigation if you haven't solved this problem by then.

Also, how wide are the swings in framerate while you're playing? Some games just can't take rapid 50-100fps swings without becoming unstable, especially those that sync or semi-sync AI calculations with framerate, which I think Shogun does.

Edit: This would explain why movies crash too, because if I'm not mistaken all cutscenes are frame capped.

I don't play in anything but DX 11 if it's possible.

Not when purchased from gamestop, Best Buy or Circuit City.

Edit: Before a bunch of hooplah about this not being possible hijacks this thread: I don't know if you can still do it, but if you have a physical disk you used to be able to install it, put steam in offline mode and start the game directly with a shortcut from the .exe if it was tied to another account. No online play, but since I suck too much to play RTS's online, I don't care.

It's on sale now for 7 bucks on gamestop impulse and you actiave on steam.

I didn't get a chance to try no crossfire yet. But hopefully that's where the issue is. I have not played it at all, so i will delete everything and redownload. It's only like a 15 min download... so no big deal.

Also, while i understand you say you had no issues, the problem seems to have started in the last few months with a patch. So there maybe issues with it now.

Hmm, ok then I agree, it's not a driver issue then. Please let us know if a fresh install solves it, odd problem.
