Guide: Adding Screws to the Achieva Shimian to Fix Back Light Bleed.

This is just a little guide to help give you an idea of what you're doing when attempting to fix back light bleed (BLB) on the Achieva Shimian.

1) Take the stand off the monitor or monitor off your wall mount and place it on a flat surface. You going to want it to be in a fairly clean environment and the height of the surface should allow you to get some decent leverage on the monitor.

P1020617.jpg

2) You're going to want a piece of paper that you can slide under the edge of the bezel to protect the display from you're hands/fingers while you pull off the outer bezel.

P1020618.jpg
A quick note here, it wont actually slide under very far, but that's ok.

As you can see in the photo the bottom edge of mine was loose to begin with. This was due to a broken screw hole piece that I'll show you later. For me this was the obvious place to start. But it was just as easy to just pull up on the bezel from the screen side of the other edges. You want to apply firm consistent pressure. Just keep pulling at it till you feel the tape give away and the plastic clips pop out. This will feel kinda like you broke the plastic, but that's ok. It's just the tabs popping out. Do one full side at a time until you've done them all and removed the bezel.

P1020620.jpg

This is what it looks like with the bezel removed.

P1020621.jpg

As you can see it's just some tape and plastic clips holding it on. Mine also had no tape at all at the top. doh.gif

3) Next there are 8 screws holding the white frame to the back of the monitor. Remove all 8 of these. One thing you're going to want to do is try to avoid touching the tape as you want it to be as sticky as possible when putting it back together. After you've removed the screws the frame is still held in place by plastic tabs. If you gently pull the frame away from the side the clip is on they pop right out very easily.

P1020624.jpg

P1020631.jpg

With the white frame removed you now have access to the panel itself. As you can see there is a serious bit of warping at the top middle of mine. This causes light bleed to either side. I couldn't figure out a way to easily bend that back without risking damage to the display. If someone knows of a way please post below.

P1020632.jpg

4) Our main goal here is not to bend the metal back, but to put screws into the holes that already exist to tighten the frame up around the whole panel. As you can see in the photo you want to carefully lift the panel up and kinda turn it just a couple degrees so it rests on the edge of the back frame. FYI there was about 3 inches of play in my wiring. Lift yours up and check it out before getting carried away moving the panel around.
This will give you access to the screw holes that they aren't utilizing during production. In the photo I've already put the screws in. There are 4 on the bottom and four across the top.

P1020634.jpg

I went to Lowes to try to find screws but they didn't have anything even close. So..
I used screws that were left over from my case! They are very short and this is a close up of the ones I'm talking about:

P1020635.jpg
Top edge.

You're going to want hold onto opposite side of the panel as you screw them in. Be very careful not to slip with your screwdriver.

5) Reverse the process. Set the panel back into the back frame, put the white frame back on, install all 8 screws, reapply the black bezel pushing down firmly all around the bezel making sure it is completely snapped back together.

P1020638.jpg
This is why my bottom edge wasn't tight. I was able to super glue this back in place and it's perfect now.

P1020640.jpg

P1020641.jpg

I didn't like the Shimian thing on the front as I feel like it cheapens it. I used nail polish remover with acetone and it came right off. Unfortunately as you can see it almost looks like it melted the black plastic. It's really odd and I don't know why it did that. It's not horribly noticeable, but still be careful with the nail polish remover!

P1020642.jpg
P1020643.jpg

As you can see there is still light bleed at the top where the frame is warped. However the bottom is nearly perfect now and I'm super happy considering this cost me $0 to do.

Please post comments or suggestions! And if someone knows how to bend that top warp back please post that!

This is a fantastic article. It really helps everyone who needs to do this. I have a question though.

My monitor has a ton of yellow light bleed coming from all corners. When I push on that area of the monitor, it becomes eve more yellow. It's clear to me, that the reason it is happening, is because that area of the screen is being pushed down more then say the middle.

Would adding more screws help this, or would loosening some, and adding more to the middle be the solution?

Well you can't remove screws because there aren't any there to begin with. However I may be possible to bend the from out slightly from the screen. I would put a piece of paper on the screen again to protect it and pull up gently on the metal edge. GL!

I personally went with actually bending the panel frame to straighten it out. It was just as bent as yours, and it did the trick. This is a great guide though to help others, and I wish I had this guide to work with when I opened mine.

Ok how did you bend it back straight? What tools did you use if any? I really wanted to do that, but I just couldn't see how.

I gripped it firmly with my hands and bent it back reallllly slowly. Use just enough force to get it to start bending back. Don't use too much strength. The metal is pretty stiff though, so chances if breaking anything are really slim

Did you take that metal "frame" off the panel? I just cant see being able to bend it enough with it attached to the panel. Maybe I'll take it back apart in the morning and try again.
