Help me pick a drive configuration

Hi guys,

So I recently got a 256GB SSD and have been using it for my OS, programs and games.

I previously used a 300GB Velociraptor (older one) for my games, and thus far haven't really noticed a huge difference in terms of load times etc.
I'm thinking this is because my board is only SATA II, and I'm not fully utilizing my SSD at this point.

Don't plan on upgrading my board till Haswell, and also don't really want to shell out for a decent sata card either (only one I found that didn't appear to be a total PoS was $100+)
That said, I'm not really sure what the best thing to do here is as I need another drive still - sooooooooooo - here are my options:

1) 256GB M4 for OS/programs/games + get a 500GB caviar black or something for media/downloads etc (my 2TB drive is for backup only).

2) Get a 128GB SSD and use the 256GB M4 for games/media/downloads

3) 128GB SSD for OS/programs + a 500GB velociraptor for games + media (I could seel/trade my 256gb to offset some cost).

Now I know option 3 probably won't get much love, but I've seen them go for $150ish and that's a lot less than any 500GB+ SSD.
As for the others, I'm thinking #1 is the easiest to do right now and #2 well I don't know it just seemed kinda cool lol.

Looking forward to your input smile.gif

Or, option 4, get another 256GB M4 and RAID them!

Yea thats an option though still no TRIM w that afaik; plus my board is already bottlenecking my ssd(s).

Garbage collection still works with RAID and that is enough to keep the SSDs performing well in that environment. The lack of TRIM availability in RAID means higher write amplification and thus a shorter drive lifespan.

How much shorter varies greatly based on the total capacity of the drives which make up the RAID array, the number of flash cycles available, the amount of data being written, the amount of overprovisioning, etc. On a 512 GB RAID array using SSDs equipped with (worst case) 3k cycle flash where 10 GB a day is written on average, the drive lifespan is still going to be decades even without TRIM.

And, to clarify: your SATA II channel is bottlenecking your SATA III SSD. If you add another SSD in RAID 0, you should see a performance increase of nearly double because you are then able to use the bandwidth of a second SATA II channel.
