Cooler Master V8/V10 - Worth it?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at coolers for an Ivy Bridge platform, and I was strongly considering the Noctua NH-D14 - but the 1240g is kind of turning me off. I don't like that much weight hanging off my MoBo, but it seems like I have little choice when it comes to modern Air coolers.

Then I remembered the CM V8 and V10. I remember they got good reviews upon release, but did they stand up to the test of time? The V10 has twice as many heat pipes, weighs less, doubles as a RAM fan kit, has a TEC, and is only $15 more than the NH-D14
The V8 has 8 heat pipes, is $30 cheaper, has no more than 2 heat pipes per aluminum fin arrangement (better surface area per pipe, all things being equal) and is just over half the weight of the NH-D14.

So, the CM V8 and V10, are they still considered good coolers by modern standards*? Or do they lack the 'umph' for Ivy Bridge?

*I'm willing to buy better fans. I pretty much always write off stock fans these days anyway.

I always thought the v8 was a bit crappy, Its only got the single 120mm in there. The v10 seemed to get results but it was barely anything to rave about. I think due to its size no one bought it and it just got phased out.

The Ivy is a really efficient chip, the v10 and d14 were designed for the first generation of extreme i7s on the 1366 socket which dump a lot of heat.

I would grab the noctua, it performs better than the v8. It has a backplate that sits on the metal plate on the socket. Unless you are moving the case about all the time its not going to be a problem. http://www.clunk.org.uk/reviews/noctua-nh-c14-cpu-cooler-review/Page-6.html

Not worth it. After replacing the fan in my v8, it still doesn't cool that well.

The CM V8 is not all that good and the v10 weighs 1200g so its not even lighter then a d-14 and does not perform as well. Just get a noctua nh-d14 or a Thermalright silver arrow. The weight is really not an issue as the backlate provides plenty of support.

On paper the V8 and V10 look quite good, but in real life usage they simply aren't, especially in comparison with other well known market contenders.

NH-D14, Silver Arrow and the Phanteks PH-TC14PE (hope I got that right, going off memory here) are all you best options, go with whichever is cheaper and your location of purchase. They're all within a very few degrees of one another and you really can't go wrong with any of the three.

The weight of the cooler isn't an issue, the mounting system(s) is (are) beyond secure and extremely reliable smile.gif

Speaking as a prior V8 owner, while its not a bad cooler, it allowed me to overclock my Q6600 to 3.4Ghz within acceptable temperatures, but there are simply better coolers on the market right now.
