It would be good, but only if you had a way to make the software available offline without internet on the PC's you use regularly. Also, when will they decrease the time Steam takes to log in and boot up?

Hmmmm ... while I like Steam for my games I'm not sure I would like to put all my eggs into that one basket. Granted, if I see a good deal for some-kind of software I would like to have then I would probably take it, however, for anything I really needed for work ... probably not. The risks would not be worth it considering "the cloud" and potential losses resulting from service interruptions.

Whats more is that Linux has had an application storefront for a decade but did Valve complain about it encroaching on their business model when they decided to put Steam on Linux? Well, Steam does require Windows, but that has nothing to do with MS Marketplace...no one is saying anything about Windows and Steam...this is about Steam and Microsoft Marketplace...or any other digital download service. And it is true that Steam was not the first...but as is the case in many things, Steam did it first successfully on a large scale so they are going to be well liked. Replace the word Steam in that sentence with any other digital download service and that would be the service that everyone would like to have all their software. It is convenient to have more stuff in one place. That is all...I am sure there are a few people out there that actually are die-hard fans and would do anything to use Valve's services, but the extremely large majority of people are happy about this prospect out of simple convenience.

I have no problems using Steam for games. I buy very few games upon release and usually wait before trying any games. I'm not hardcore, I just play games for fun, so Steam is a good deal for me for games.

That said, I'd NEVER NEVER EVER use Steam for productivity software. It's just too big a risk.
