[KT] Steam To Start Selling Non-Game Software - Page 8

The market for this new service would be only the people with always on Internet connections. I think the number of potential customers in that market is rather large. If logging in to Steam was an issue to some one they wouldn't use it. Me personally? Any time my PC is turned on it is logged into Steam so this would be great for me.

The only issue I can see happening is that they will pretty need to have multiple users on one account. If I am playing a game on Steam and my wife wants to use some software on a laptop there could be some issues. Though we do this right now with games using offline mode on the laptop most of the time. So perhaps streamlining the offline mode would be needed before breaking ground on this.

Or they could just say tough and force you to only use one piece of software at a time on an account. I am sure there would still be a lot of people that would be OK with that as it wouldn't affect their usage.

I edited my post to add this, but the other issue is that currently Steam can decide to shut down your account, and then you would lose the games and the software

Since Digital Purchases apparently mean you own absolutely nothing these days

Yeah, there would need to be a separation in that regard. If you get caught griefing/cheating in game that shouldn't affect your ability to use MS Office 2013 or whatever. So they would need to ban from games, but leave the other software alone. This could be easily done by having semi-separate accounts...if everything is OK you get both when logged on to one. If some thing is wrong, then you only get the library for the non-gaming software. Think netflix by mail service and streaming service...if you only have one that is all you see when logged in. If you have both then you see both.

Really they need to rethink the whole banning idea anyway. If you cheat in one game you should be banned from that one game...not all games. For that matter if you got caught using production software to do not so nice things you could get banned from that software too. That would completely remove probably the largest opposition to this idea...but that is really a different discussion.

The whole Digital Licensing Bull-Donkey needs to be completely revamped. You Should NEVER be kept away from your purchases, no matter what you did, you should ALWAYS be able to access your Games or programs or whatever you have paid for.

It should be like that, and unfortunately its not like that..

I have little to worry about, I play on my Guilds own server with strict rules forbidding Children to play there. none of us use cheats of any form.

But one day, a member of OCN apparently got a hold of my account, that little turd could have got me banned... then where would I be? Out 80 some odd games...

That would not hold up in court. In EU for sure in the light of that latest decision about licenses and their resale and in US - probably as well. They can ban you from buying new software through them but cutting your usage of software you own will get em spanked. And - as far as I understand - currently you do own the license to software you buy digitally.

yahh thats the problem

apparently in the US

You Only Purchase the Right to Use the Game under the Owners Rules and Laws

In this case Steams Rules and Laws.

You cant even sue em for your money back or to get the games =(

Even when you buy a Hardcopy of the game, you still only Purchase the Right to play the game Under the correct circumstances.

Just with Hardcopy, they cant physically stop you from playing the game. Steam can Litterally make you lose everything you spent your money on.

I think most Steam customers make more game purchases than software. A lot of people stand to lose more in games than software. the extra software is drop in the bucket compared to the value of many peoples' Steam accounts.

If Steam does this it will be a hit and probably 99.9% of the people that use it will never have issues accessing their software. I'd do it in a heart beat. Though if Origin started it first I would go through them as well. I mean right now do you trust Microsoft to leave the install files up on there site for you to download older versions of Office? Especially with Office 2013 around the corner. It would not surprise me to go to the site one day to read a message that this version of office is no longer available, click here to purchase the new version. That isn't likely to happen on Steam...unless MS forced them to (not that MS would even allow Steam to sell their products...just making a hypothetical example)
