[Sciencemag] You Are Here; A Black Hole Is There; Largest 3D map of black holes and massive galaxies

Quote:
Researchers today released the largest three-dimensional map of black holes and massive galaxies yet produced, which pinpoints the locations and distances to more than 1 million galaxies. Most of those galaxies, each of which contains more than 100 billion stars, lie between 1 billion and 6 billion light-years from Earth.

It is quite amazing to think about how small we are, but how far we can really see.

agreed. knowing that in just one of these galaxies and in one of the solar systems in the galaxies lies us..then looking all of these other ones. it cannot be a coincidence..

I am pretty sure the map is made from the prospective of Earth.

Thanks. I was looking for the main source for about 10 minutes on the page, but turns out it was really just in the actual article. doh.gif Normally it's in some little area above or below.

I'm more interested in what happens if we zoom out enough.

I reckon all those galaxies form the leg of a chair. just a guess.

But naw, srsly, of course there's life. There's just an impossibly high number of stars and planets, there just has to be life elsewhere. Question is when will we find it?

And when i say life, i'm talking intelligent lifeforms, not micro-organisms which i think are in abundance out there...probably within our own solar system too (outside of earth, of course)

Can you also zoom in into galaxies to see the known solar systems and stars/planets?? Would be cool
How much HDD space would you need for this? Since the universe is kinda massive i would think this map it super massive.

WOW, they should add all that data to SpaceEngine

EDIT:
Not sure how they would make that work acctually since the farther out you look the farther back in time you go so if you flew to those galaxies in space engine they would be outdated.

That video was amazing, it really gave a sense of the scale of the universe.

I am a tiny dot on a tiny dot in the middle of a group of lots of other tiny dots, which in turn is surrounded by lots of other groups.

Compared to the universe I am insignificant.

The universe does not care about me, my life or my hopes and dreams.

I wonder if it will notice if I leave work early.
