Most Silent Case EVER??? - Page 2

Which is why I added the last sentence: "If you need better than this, you will probably have to build a custom case. Which might also be cheaper."

The Zalmans are ridiculously expensive. But the question was "Most silent case ever", no holds barred. I know for sure I could build just as quiet a case for less. It would probably be a bit more bulky but it would be cheaper. Actually, as long as your rig can get by on the 400W PSU, the Zalmans would be very hard to beat. The only noise generators woul be the drives. I guess you could use some Solid State Drives and eliminate that, they are absolutely quite as there's no moving parts. But that would still leave you the Opticals and by definition they not only have to have moving parts but they also have to be accessible. Only way around those would be to have them behind a sound proofed door.

I did some studio design work, its very interesting. We broke up all the major surfaces so there were no parallel or perpendicular planes, varied the sizes and shapes, even made the two sides of any walls non-parallel. Same with the windows, double pane with the panes different sizes and not parallel. All wallboard was double-ply and glued between and acoustically suspended. We even used double studs and joists, non-parallel and varied the spacing. All surfaces were treated with acoustic paints/coverings and then we started in with the foam and pads. The one weak point was the door. We didn't have the space to do an airlock type of door. So it was sealed and coated and covered with absorbtive and dispersive foams and the frame was acoustically isolated from the walls. Whole thing drove the workers mad.

wow interesting project there rafh.

I got an Antec Sonata II with 450 watt antec psu for 80 bucks at frys.

much more quieter than my old junker.

80 bucks is hard to beat for a stylish case and psu.

I moved all the oem compaq stuff into the case, mainly because I will be giving it to my GF, and she doesnt know the differences between the Armor, p180 etc...

So right now I am looking at the Armor, 900, and P180...

The ability to have a door to shut up the optical drives is unbelievably great.
so the p180 is onto a lead right now.

Doors are a great problem, on the one hand, as you point out, they are about the only means to silencing Optical Drives, on the other hand, doors make the Opticals more difficult to get to when you are using them and one often leaves the buggers open when doing so, defeating the purpose. Stealthing can help, but its dependent on fine adjustments and such, so the result is often less than desired.

For me, the Opticals aren't such a big problem, I just don't use them all that much. For someone that did, a door is probably the best option.
