For me, there's more than just immersion at stake here, i find it easier to control my vehicle when "inside" it, and i make use of things such as mirrors. Heck i even drive with TrackIR which greatly helps this kind of thing.
this 5% figure i think is total bullpoop. This choice they made is just to cut costs because it's a much less serious/arcade style game, which is fair enough i spose (and yes, i expect consoles played some role in this decision too)
And although it's cool that they released this response, it's just dug themselves a bigger hole in my book. I kinda felt after the death of Colin Mcrae the entire Codemasters line of racing games just turned far more arcade-style. Not my thing.

For example, I tend to drift in car and depending what car you have Your style of drifting changes a lot, Say your in a RX7 you will most likely drift closer to the curb on right hand turns or even take wider right hand turns to drift because your viewpoint is sitting on the right side of the car and you have a better sense of what you may hit (opponent or obstacle) and where your front wheels are turning, And vice versa with left hand drive cars.
