core 2 duo to core 2 quad for dedicated folding?

Thread Starter
Were picking up a used dell optiplex 745 Friday to be used as a dedicated folder. Got it for $50 with a 19 inch lcd monitor. It has a 3 ghz core 2 duo, 4 gigs ram, 250 gb hdd and Windows 7 Ultimate full version (not builders). My original plan was to buy this and a core 2 quad rig to use as dedicated folders, but the quad has a virus and doesnt run, so i dont want to take a chance on it incase it has other issues besides the virus.

My question is, would it be worth it, in terms of ppd, to upgrade the core 2 duo to a core 2 quad? I've seen the quads for less the $100 on ebay and just over $100 on newegg. I know its older, but i cant afford an 1155 board and processor. Thank you for any help

Jugding from this:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AtEcEKCVZ_0PdGhKXzUyQXcybGFUVjBpWVN2Wk1zQmc&gid=0

The PPD is tripled from a core 2 duo (E8400) to a core 2 quad (Q9650). I know that they are older work units, but it still should show the type of performance you should expect to see today.

I looked up the difference in power and the difference is about 15 Watts at stock clocks.

Is tripling the points (~4000 ppd), 15 extra watts, and a $100 worth it, that is up to you to deside.

4000 ppd is around 120k more a month so its seems worth it to me smile.gif, especially if i can find a cheap gpu to add to it. Luckily i dont have to worry about electricty since its included in rent. Thank you

It looks like the core 2 quads dont come with coolers so ill order one when i order the processor, cause im assuming the one on the core 2 duo is insuficient.

I have an Dell Optiplex 330,I use it quite a bit,it is my browser. My comment concerns the Dell method for mounting a heat sink fan(HSF) to the motherboard.I wanted to put a long gpu in the PCIe slot so I could fold while browsing (I used a 275 gpu).Due to the lenght of the card the Dell cooling (very well thought out) could not be used,no problem I thought I will mount a Megahalems I have laying around. After removing the Dell cooling ductwork I see Dell has mounted the cpu at an angle to the edges of the motherboard (as opposed to being parallel).Mounting the Megahalems at this angle would cause interference in the case.I ended up mounting the Megahalems parallel to the motherboard (just missing the edges of the cpu by a little bit.If you plan on folding on the cpu in this Optiplex have a look at the cpu mounting position,it may be uniquely Dell.My 330 Optiplex worked out for gpu folding (remote power supply mounting) but I did not feel the ppd from cpu folding was worth it.

Well now that ive been shopping around, the ones i found under $100 were not the q9650, they were ones that get much less ppd. The q9650 sells for more then an i5 2500k. I havent commited to buying this optiplex and now im having 2nd thoughts. I thinking i may pass on this deal and use the money to help pay my new egg card off, and then build another i5 or even an i7 rig later this year, maybe on a cyber monday sale. I do have a spare case so thats a start. Thank you for all the help everyone

anyone know what kind of ppd a core2quad will bring in? i have one at my girlfriend's house, but i think it is a q6600 and im not sure if it would be worth making it a dedicated folder. maybe just a GPU machine...

if it is the q6600 at stock clocks then 4000ppd according to this chart https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AtEcEKCVZ_0PdGhKXzUyQXcybGFUVjBpWVN2Wk1zQmc&gid=0

Some years back people would say any points you manage to generate no matter what the cost are worth it.It seems people are realising that some components a just not worth folding on. For me a 955 is barely worth folding on,with the bottom cpu really being a i7-920 or a 6 core AMD.I do not consider any dual cores worth it and the Q6600 barely makes it,preferably not though.

I started thinking if i could manage to get a good, stable overclock on my gpu, i can squeeze a few thousand more ppd out of it, and be better off then if i bought the core 2 duo rig.
