$60 Mechanical Keyboard or $120 Mechanical Keyboard

post #1 of 22
Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a new mechanical keyboard and as I read through threads and articles, I can't quite grasp what the key difference is between the ~$60 keyboard and the ~$120 keyboards.

For example, for $60 you can get a Cooler Master Quickfire. For $120 you can get a Max Nighthawk x8.

I understand you're getting better build quality with the Nighthawk, per say - but is it worth double the price? Is there more to it that I may be missing?

Personally I don't have a budget per-say, but I want to get the best bang for the buck.

Cooler Master Quickfire (rapid only, not sure about others) has the same OEM as Filco (top notch quality). Max Nighthawk is a more gamer orientated which usually sucks in quality. If I were you, I would get a CM Quickfire Rapid.

it depends on how much typing you do vs how much gaming you do. Doing a lot of typing requires a heavy stable board . gaming on a cheap board is for me is actually pretty fine.... theres no real reason to spend a lot of money if all you do dis game imo. But I write so many papers and program and report that its just way to uncomfortable to have any keyboard flex like the cheaper boards give you. I have had a filco, KBTalking, and a Ducky and the duck and filco were byfare better quality;

I have both the quickfire rapid and a Leopold tenkeyless (brown switches). The rapid is a solid keyboard. Both are excellent quality. I paid more for the leopold because I wanted brown switches. If I could get the rapid with brown switches I would've bought 2. The rapid (blue) I use at work and the leopold at home for gaming and all around tasks. I love both.

Well, to be honest if you are looking for a mechanical keyboard from a bang for buck perspective, Cooler Master Quickfire would win hands down i guess as its just half the price for a Blue Cherry MX switch.

Differences come up when you want a keyboard from a gaming perspective also which then bumps up the Quickfire to $80(brown switches) or $90 (red switches) or you want a backlit keyboard which then makes the Nighthawk X8/X9 a better buy at that price point as it gives those features without looking too 'gamer'.
It even includes a wrist pad (important for me) as I read from reviews that the Quickfire is a tad too high and can result in wrist pain if not used without a wrist pad for long gaming sessions.

That's interesting... I will primarily be using it for gaming. Is the QuickFire with brown switches really $80? I only see them around for $110ish
