Upgrade options: 560 ti to 7870, or PII 965 to i5 2500k ?

Thread Starter
First off, sorry if this isn't the correct forum, but it's kind of a general question.
I have some money to spend and I'm wondering what would be a better upgrade for gaming and overall computer performance.
I can either spend it on an HD7870 (upgrading from a GTX 560 Ti), or I can invest into a new mobo and get an i5 2500k (upgrading from a 4.0 GHz PII 965).
Normally I know upgrading the GPU yields more significant results, but a lot of the games I play often (Starcraft, WoW, Shogun, Battlefield, Minecraft) seem to be pretty CPU intensive. I held out against the Sandy Bridge love for a while since I honestly felt the Phenom was plenty fast, but now I'm wondering if the hype was justified.

Also, if there are any other suggestions to be made, go ahead. I haven't checked up on new hardware in a while so maybe there's another CPU/GPU in the same range I'm not considering.

Thanks in advance, guys!

Grab a 2500k. A 7870 would yield better gaming, but not overall.

I say go with the vid card, your PhII @ 4GHz can still get the chicken cooked. If you're looking to upgrade elsewhere then pickup a SSD smile.gif

Go with the 2500k, while the 7870 will help, those games run perfectly fine on high no AA on a 560ti system with a 2500k.

I'd say grab the 7870 for now. The processor has a little bit of life left in it. But their both great upgrades.

If i were you i'd go with the i5 because its way better than the 965 for mmos and some single player games.

I went from a 965 to a 2600k and and saw a huge frame rate increase while playing mmo games such as World of Warcraft,Rift,Swtor,Tera and Guild Wars 2.However my frame rate in most single player games stayed about the same.

I started out with a 970 and a 560ti, so I know exactly where your at, I play WOW on maxed settings all the time, I swithced to a i73820, and my frame rates in the large cities in WOW went from mid 20's to around 60 during the busy times of day. I have two 560ti's in sli now but I play alot of RTS like Forged Alliance and Sins of a Solar Empire which are extremely CPU limited and they run better than they did before. You will probably see slight gains with a video upgrade but you will see improvements switching to intel, I know I did, In BF3 my minimum frames went up from around 47-50 to rarely dropping below 60. These are just my personal experiences YMMV.

The phenom will play your games but the 2500k will play them better:bruce:
Either way Im sure you will be happy, If you go with the vid card get a good cooler and overclock the phenom and its a win win.
And Phenom does sound cooler than i5 lol

Good luck

That rig is perfectly fine for gaming, I would go for a 128Gb SSD, wow on a SSD = pure awesomeness.

I vote for the cpu/mobo upgrade to be honest, I think you'll appreciate it more overall.
