Is this overkill for a HTPC? $900

Thread Starter
Sharp Aquos Quattron LED TV 1080p 60 inch
Would like to watch 3D blu-ray discs, playback movies on hard drive, surf web/stream live NHL games

This is my first build that is meant as HTPC, not as a gaming rig (see sig for my current gaming rig). Would like to keep things silent too. And I love the look of computer towers so I'd rather have that than a HTPC case

CPU - Intel Core i3-2120 $121.98
GPU - ASUS GeForce GT 440 $76.99 (-10 MIR)
MOBO - ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 $104.99
PS -Corsair Enthusiast TX 650W $93.12
HD1 (windows OS) - Crucial 64 GB SSD $70.98
OS - Windows OEM $90.90
HD2 - Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green $89.99
RAM - Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8 GB (2x4gb) $53.99
BD Player - Pioneer Electronics USA Blu Ray BDR-2207B5PK $86.64
CPU Cooler - CM Hyper 212 EVO $32.39
Case - Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Case 78.99 (-10 MIR)

TOTAL = 900.96 (-20 for rebates) (all from amazon as they beat newegg on everything)

Does this seem excessive for what I want to do? I would like to hear your recommendations

Thanks OC!!

Don't count in rebates, they often "don't work".

I'd say maybe spend a tiny bit more on a better PSU from Corsair, XFX, or Seasonic.

Also, 8GB is a bit much. You'd do perfectly fine with 4GB. And if you're just using the SSD for your primary drive, grab a cheaper 32GB size instead.

Find a motherboard with some expandability; in case you decide you want to add in a sound card later. But other than that looks pretty good.
Also, you won't need an aftermarket cooler. You won't be over clocking, and you'll be far enough away where you won't hear the fan if it spins up. (Also your volume will be up.)

One thing I will recommend, is making sure that your speakers are magnetically shielded. If not, place your computer as far from them as possible. Regular speakers aren't much to worry about, but sub woofers over time might cause some data errors if the computer is too close, or the sub vibrates and affects the drives to much.

EDIT: If you're thinking this budget is a bit too high, or are looking to spend less. I'd suggest going with AMD. Their processors are decent, and a Phenom, FX, or APU processor and board could and would probably be cheaper for similar performance. After all, you're only planning on using it for videos and music, correct? You don't need THAT much power packed into a build for that.

Psu is overkill a cx430 would be fine. And I would go with h61 board if you are not doing any overclocking. If you are stick to z68

Also technically 4gb is more suited but ram is so cheap you could just throw 8 in anyway. Your choice.

You could always drop to an am3 proc and get a cheaper motherboard. If you go with llano you could probably eliminate the need for a graphics card.

You actually don't really even need Windows... If it's just an HTPC, you'd probably be perfectly fine running some Linux distro and saving money on the OS.

As for case, you really don't need anything fancy. I'd say find a case more like $50 and fits your taste/room nicely.

A good alternative for cheaper CPU and motherboard;

I'm sure integrated GPU's could. He just needs to find a BluRay decoder to view them, I believe.

That's over kill for a HTPC...

a full size ATX board and a mid-tower case are not what you want for a HTPC...it's just to large.

He could do without the cooler, it would really serve no purpose, especially for an HTPC. That would be a waste. The stock cooler will be fine.

As for the PSU, I'd still suggest going with something like a Corsair CX500. It's the same price, for more reliability.

Everything else seems fine.
