1.6K New gaming rig build (Canada (NCIX or Memoryexpress))

Thread Starter
So i am planning to do a complete new build because my old build is just so outdated. Anyways, my budget is 1.6K (can go over a bit if needed) and I was hoping if anyone can help me out to maximize what i can get. I mainly do gaming and that's basically it lol.

My preferences:

- I prefer Nvidia but i have nothing against ATI, if ATI is more worth it then im totally fine with that
- I'm pretty sure Im going with the Sabertooth unless otherwise
- Prefer Intel processors, I want to overclock so which every processor from intel is best for that im down for it ( maybe 3570K or 2500K?)
- I REALLY WANT THE OBSIDIAN CASES !
- No preference for Ram
- Cooling: Need something that can support my overclocking
- SSD and Harddrive? 1tb harddrive and SSD from intel maybe?

I have a lot of time until I actually go out and purchase the parts, so i want to take my time and figure out whats the best (planning to do the build late October)

I AM OPEN FOR ANY SUGGESTION THAT ARE EVEN OUT OF THE PREFERENCES IF IT MAKES MY PC GO AWESOMEPANTS!

I haven't been keeping up on stuff, but here ya go:

-GPU: I'm not sure what ATI has, something like the 7970 GHZ edition. I would get the Nvidia GTX 670 as it performs very well.

-3570k will overclock better than the 2500k

-Those are nice but can be sorta expensive

-8Gb is usually a good amount, but with ram being so cheap, you can go for higher amounts like 16Gb without breaking the bank. Corsair, G Skill, and Samsung are all good brands.

-If you want to try watercooling I would recommend the XSPC Rasa watercooling kits which can be found in all different models, all for >$200.

-1Tb seems fine unless you need more. HDD space is really expensive right now, but a few cheap ones can be found on sale. SSD's are awesome too. Crucial had some amazing sales on their last generation SSD's a little while ago which might still be going on. It was like >$100 for the 128gb M4.

I would get a 670 or 680 depending on budget, maybe one with more vram if you plan on multiple monitors or sli ever.

Sabertooth is a real nice board IMO. Deffinately get a z77 board unless you plan to go socket 2011 but I would stick with 1155 socket if your looking for best $ for performance. 2500k should overclock better than a 35xx series (due to Ivy heat issues) but the Ivy have better IPC so performance will probably be close but Ivy with Z77 will get you PCI 3.0.

Ram is pretty much up too you but I prefer Corsair personally and I would get at least 8 gig. Something like 2400mhz or higher if you like to overclock, I have dominator GT's and the overclock like mad, also look at the Gskill, the have lots of high frequency kits.

Make sure to go a little overboard on the psu if you plan to overclock heavily, good clean power delivery can make the difference between a good overclock and a great one, Corsair makes some great ones. Modular is nice.

I have a crucial M4 128 SSD and it works wonders, boots amazingly fast and has been by far my favorite upgrade to date. I also have a 640 caviar black HDD for storage. If you want to store games on the SSD you may want to go 256 or larger.

CAUTION: Watercooling is very addictive and not cheap. I started with an H80 sealed unit, Then a small cpu loop. Now Im looking to block my cards but didnt get refrence cards so im kinda stuck. Dont want to count the dollars I have spent watercooling but I am still glad i did it. If you read the watercooling stickies, take you time, and buy wisely it can be done at reasonable costs relatively safely.

Good luck and hope this helps.

If I'm planning to do a lot of overclocking and tweaking should i go 1200W or like 850W? Originally i was planning to use 750W
post #6 of 17
1200w is the dumbest thing ever for a build thats 1.6k and what ur gunna do with it i recommend a modular 750w since your only going to be using single card setup, 750 is more than enough for a gtx 670 biggrin.gif

Dude. You're not even going to need to overclock with something like a 2500k, your GPU will be your bottleneck by far.
