Can i control two fans off one fan controller??

Hi all,

i have a question about a fan controller i have brought (Sansun Thermal Monster).

the controller can control three fans seperatly using three temp probes. I have however, 5 case fans in my case.

I was wondering if it is possible to control two fans off one of the controllers?

At the front of the case i have two Akasa Silent 80mm fans. They are terminated with three pins (Red Black Yellow). I presume the yellow returns the fan RPM to the controller? And that the fan is controlled by varying the voltage to the units?

Now, i am not asking for a reading (rpm) for both the units since i realise this is not possible. But would it be possible to connect the one fan to the controller to get rpm and control etc. and then connect the other fan to the connected fan (perhaps not including connecting the yellow rpm lead?

My electrical physics has all been fogotton now, what happens to the voltage? Do the fans share it and thus only spin half as fast?

I essentially want to have one fan fully connected and the other fan to copy whatever the first fan is doing.....

Any help would be appreciated! thanks,

edd

Yeah should be able to do that no problem, as you said, you can monitor one fan but not the other, also check the fan wattage as some controllers only put out a small amount.

Check ebay as they have 3pin fan splitter cables for about £3 inc P+P

It would only draw double as much power from the outlet, so yes it is possible and plus it would be double as precise.

So, if the controller is trying to control the fan at 2000rpm its going to run both at 2000rpm and not actually run both 1/2 each at 1000rpm?

It will run both at 2000. The fans will draw as much power as they need.

If you are doing it in parallel (which I assume), try to use identical fans- You don't want to feed 1 fan 10W whereas the other draws only 7W...You will quickly fry it.

Or is that in series? I dunno, but in any case, try to run identical fans.

hey,

here is a link to the kind of splitter i will buy. This should run them in parallel i believe.

Ebay Splitter

Does it matter if both the fans yellow cables are plugged into the splitter? Will that confuse the controller?

Thats what i was thinking, two fans can't report to one speed sensor the only thing i can think of is report twice the speed eg: Two fans @ 2000rpm would read as 4000rpm i dunno

If something like that was to happen id cut one of the yellow wires to the fan i did'nt need to worry about to much.
