How should I have my radiator?

I'm getting a black ice 360mm Radiator for my next build and it's my first watercooling setup. I will only be cooling my FX 8150 CPU but I will overclock this puppy to at least 4.5GHz and i've heard they get HOT. As many of you know, the 800D has a special airflow design and I would really want to have the fans on the radiator pushing air OUT of the case.

I've heard this isn't a good idea, but I have a cool house (18c) and will have good airflow (3 Bitfenix Spectre pro 140mm's, 4 Bitfenix Spectre pro 120mm's). The only things in my build producing heat besides my cpu are my graphics cards, which are dual GTX 550 TI's, but besides those nothing else makes too much heat.

Would it be a good idea to set up my radiator like this?

the GTX360 will need a hefty fan to do a great job cooling the hot overclock.
either a high static or high rpm rated fan. the GT-15, swiftech helix or BGears
would be some quiet-like fans to move enough air through the dense core.
if you want to use the bitfenix, then the XSPC RX360 would be a better choice,
then youcan run a quieter fan.

You should look at skinnee's 2010 rad roundup and look at delta fans or the ap29.

What you can do is use the bitfenix fans to pump air out and get a cougar 1500 RMP fan to blow air in from the back of the case. If you get a large enough CFM rating to push fresh air to your rad fans, you should be good.

Why not set the radiator fans as inlets? That will give you lower CPU temps, but slightly higher motherboard temps.

Well keep in mind that you would only be lowering the temps by a few degrees. The max I have ever seen is 5 degrees C. If he isn't overclocking to the moon, then I would probably agree that using those fans as an exhaust is probably a better idea because of the way the 800D is designed.

As much as I would love to use deltas, I just can't. This pc will be for movies and gaming, so it has to be silent.

The rad i'm using is the Black Ice SR1 Low Air Flow Optimized 360 Rad. It is 9 FPI
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/9433/ex-rad-163/Black_Ice_SR1_Low_Air_Flow_Optimized_-_360_Radiator_-_Black.html?tl=g30c95s161

I considered using the cougars but it would mess up my all black color scheme too much IMO.

The only reason I don't plan on using it as an intake is I will have 2 GTX 550 TI's which I will overclock, and having them as intakes would really mess up the 800D's airflow.

I am thinking that the smartest thing you can do is sell off your two 550TIs and use the water cooling budget to upgrade your video card setup.

But that is besides the point.

As for your case, you can use the fans as an intake. It won't make that big of a difference in air flow. I have the same case and as long as you get a good 140mm fan in the rear of the case with some higher air flow, you will be just fine. For your top fans, I would just get what ever you like. With 9 FPI I would just focus on getting some stupidly quiet fans and be done with it.

This PC cannot go over 2 grand or so, and I don't know what the best graphics cards would be for that budget. All I need them for is to play todays games at 50+ FPS, which is what dual 550 ti's do.

A quick question, how would there be much of a difference in temps if the fans are intake or outtake? I mean if the water is 40c, you'll be blowing hot air into the case, letting the other parts suffer, but as an outtake you're taking nearly room temp air and taking it out.

I currently have a temp build here that i'm using with a 9800GTX+ and a phenom ii x4 955 all on air and the case temps are 28c at load, 24c idle.

Well to answer your question having it as an intake would probably save you three degrees, but at the same time you won't be cooking your other parts with hot air. Don't get me wrong, it will be warmer in your case, but only by 3 or 4 degrees.

On another note, how much of your new build have you actually purchased? Is it possible to redesign your build? The reason I ask is that it is probably a poor choice to go with dual 550ti s in your setup. not because the GPUs itself are bad, but rather because it probably is not going to have enough VRAM for future games. Plus you still have other little problems with SLI. A good 660ti or AMD 7950 will still play games at 50 FPS and probably cost about the same as 2 550tis, but the extra vram on these cards will help with things like anti aliasing and things of that nature.

Secondly I would get rid of the 8150 in the build. If you are an AMD fan and don't mind the performance issues AMD has, then at least go with the piledriver chips. They should at least run a bit cooler in which case you might not even need such extravagant cooling to hit 4.5 ghz or above. And if nothing else, the i5 2500K can go up pretty high on a basic cm 212 evo smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif
