IPS for MMOs?

So I am in the market for a new monitor and I'm having a hard time deciding between 120hz and IPS. At the moment I have an Asus LED monitor but it fell off my desk awhile ago and got three nice gashes in it.

Monitor usage:
MMOs
Strategy games
Lots of Skyrim
Very little FPS's
Web browsing

That is what I use my computer for mainly. So would an IPS be good for that usage? I'm really not ever sure what the difference is.

I did find this on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236288

Thoughts on that monitor? The 5ms response time makes me a little nervous tho.

5ms response should never make anyone nervous. I would be one concerned with input lag, uniform brightness, and back light bleed.

I know very little about IPS and trying to decide if this is the best route to go for my needs frown.gif

I can't speak for 120hz monitors but I can speak for IPS monitors. I was worried about the response time too but I got a good deal on a pair of ultrasharps. The first thing I did was set up my laptop and the other LCD monitors next to my IPS to see the differences. It was clear as day that the IPS blows the other monitors out of the water in terms of picture quality. I never knew how awful my laptop screen was until I did this comparison. There were actually colors in my games/programs/desktop that I didn't even notice until I had the IPS monitor.

So now I have owned these two ultrasharps for over a year and I have never once noticed, complained, or even wished for a better response time. In my normal usage (all kinds of games) I have never once found this to be an issue. Now, I'm sure someone can force the montior into a highspeed situation that will expoit its weaknesses, but considering its been a year+ and I haven't seen it on my own, this is a tradeoff I am very much willing to pay for.

I've also been told not all IPS monitors are created equal, and as with most monitors, stats (contrast ratio, response time, etc) are non-regulated and very bad metrics to use to compare across brands. IPS panel from brand A could have better advertised stats than panel B, but panel A may be fluffing their numbers and selling poorly calibrated screens. The reason I went with Ultrasharps was because it was hard to find a bad review anywhere or reports of any lag/ghosting even if they didn't have the best tech specs.

I have not spent a lot of time with 120Hz monitors, but I'm sure someone around here has used both and can give you a good comparison.

I'd go IPS over 120hz. Really no need for 120hz at all in your situation.

I should probably research more on that specific monitor in the OP because it seems too good to be true

Ok do this is the monitor i am using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236117

Basically would the IPS be a big visual upgrade? And would the ghosting be the same? I don't notice any anyway.

Doesn't apply to the VS239H-P sold in the US. It has Trace Free overdrive and has must faster response times than the "non-P" model Prad tested.
