Because sending him to jail when he isn't a direct threat to society is a waste of our money. Jails aren't free ya know.

This is the same argument bankers use to avoid prison time after wrecking millions of homes with their risky investments. Sure they didn't kill someone, but they did cause a whole lot of people to lose their houses and jobs.

I don't agree on the hiring part though, outsourcing is fine if there is no on locally to work that position. The H1 visa is one of the reasons why the US does so good in the first place, watch this:

Well now we're on a whole different topic. They sent him to jail because the law says "Go directly to jail!" Someone asked why and that is the answer. There is a school of thought that would argue the fear of jail prevents people from stealing or becoming a threat to society much more so than a fine, and the cost of the jails is less than what it would cost the country if the crime rate was higher from lack of fear.

Anyway, I think digging into prison laws and the philosphy behind criminal punishment is wayyyy beyond the scope of this thread. And maybe this whole forum for that matter, depending on how quickly the topic would be derailed into politics.

There are many less expensive ways to punish someone. He never said it wasn't a crime.

Especially once they see that he's from a big company.

On the brighter side, he might never have to worry about constipation again ...

You usually sign a contract which contains clauses about secrecy and so on, but really there is no guarantee at all.

I actually "stole" some secrets from my last job by accident - I forgot that I had some drawings and calculations printed out in a box at home which I had used on one of my overseas trips. I did it by accident and of course no one noticed, how could they?

Obviously I didn't use them for anything - I called my old company, explained everything, mailed them the originals and shredded the rest - but it shows how easily it could be done with a little forward planning.

They had to fire him, or they would have been accused of being complicit. Also, why employ someone who is going to be in jail for 3 years? And could you ever trust him again?

As for his future, I hope he likes serving fast food...
