Recommend me a laptop based on my needs

Thread Starter

Must Have:

  • i7 Ivy bridge (probably i7-3610qm)
  • at least 4GB RAM
  • 15.6" 1080p screen or 14"  900p screen
  • Dedicated graphics

Things I'd REALLY like but aren't completely necessary:

  • Backlit keyboard

I do have a budget but it's very flexible. I'm going to avoid setting a fixed price as there is always wiggle room.

I've looked at various comps including the new XPS 15 (too expensive), the Alienware m14x r2 (from dell outlet, hoping for coupons), lenovo, sager, and hp. I've found a few that I really like but I want to know what others think. Design isn't a huge deal. I program so it needs to have a nice keyboard layout. And yes, I AM a student with a .edu account, so I can get student discount.

What is the laptop going to be used for? I know you said you're a programming student... but do you intend to game heavily on it? or only occasionally? I see you have a Sandy bridge build log, is this to supplement the desktop?

I mean you've looked at all the major players. for the 15.6" Category I would look at Sager(or other Clevo based models). If you have a decent budget, they offer quite a bit of flexibility in their configurations, and good bang for your buck on most items.

If you are supplementing that in progress build, my recommendation would go for the NP9130 with a GTX 670m in it, and configure it as you see justified. That's how I did things for a long time. I had my gaming desktop for the majority of the time, and then a laptop for travel for work, or Sunday football in front of the couch. They offer solid cooling options, Optimus technology to maintain some battery life, etc... I've since switched to an m18x and my NP8130 for travel.

An m14x with the new GT 650m in it would suite this purpose as well, but I think they're probably closer in size to a 15.6" notebook than a 14"notebook. Seems to me, the Alienware notebooks run a bit big. Sager offers a 15.6" and an 11.6" notebook both with the gt 650m in it. The gaming power is greatly reduced though from the GTX 670m

I've also had good luck with Asus, they make a 15.6" G55 with a GTX 660m in it, but for some reason i remember them not utilizing optimus in one of the 2 model sizes of notebooks?

If you're looking at a laptop for school solely for gaming, and not bringing a desktop with you, I would step up to the NP9150, and upgrade the GPU, and add a bit more horsepower to it.

I am a Asus fanboy so the first thing that comes into my head, when someone says 15" laptop dedicated graphics my head goes "has to be G53/G55 what else is there" But really get that or a M14X there both awesome computers but if you go with a Alienware not that there bad, I have had two, get the extended warranty.

As I currently own an HP laptop that has lasted me 5 years, I can speak to the quality I've experienced. Others may disagree, but I've had nothing but good things to say about my old pavilion laptop. Since my old laptop is so, well... old, I've been searching for a new one too. I settled on building a desktop instead, but if I could have gotten the laptop I specd out on the HP site, I would have got that instead.

Both the dv6t-7000 and dv7t-7000 series laptops provide you with what you're looking for. Both can be customized to have fairly respectable dedicated gpu's and both have 1080p display options available to you.

Here's a link for you:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/Laptops?SearchParameter=%26%40QueryTerm%3D*%26categoryusagelaptops_dte2%3DHigh%2BPerformance%26CategoryUUIDLevelX%3DjeEQxXjbj14AAAE0syxcZzOW%26Processor_facet_DTE2%3DIntel%26%40Sort.TieredPricing%3D0&PageSize=15

Like I said, I've got nothing but good things to say about HP, and the only reason I don't have one of these new pavilions is because I live in Canada and HP does not offer customization on their laptops up here.

Best of luck

I should mention that I will have no rigs whatsoever. I currently have a Dell L502x (XPS 15) with a GT 540M and an i7 2630QM. A friend of mine is buying it and I'm gonna upgrade.

I use Linux and Windows for programming. I'm getting one with a dedicated video card because I like to occasionally game, and I will be developing Android games (using OpenGL) and it'll be nice to test them out on a performant machine. I'm not a hardcore gamer at all. A 630M would suffice (though I'm going for 650/660).

I generally don't want HP. I've used their dv6 quads (sandy bridge) and while the performance is great, I don't think their speakers or displays are up to par.

Regarding ASUS, I'm totally considering http://www.amazon.com/G55VW-ES71-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Notebook-Black/dp/B007Z9WWDW. I'm very glad to see a display port here as I use linux heavily and hdmi doesn't work with intel hd 3000 on my current laptop, so I'm forced to use mini display port. BIIIIGG plus. It doesn't seem that there is a backlit keyboard though? Can anyone confirm this?

I've looked at the new Dell Inspiron 15 running for $1200, and it seems good, but doesn't seem nearly as good as what I'm about to talk about or the ASUS above. I'm pretty sure there's no chance I'll be getting it.

I've never owned a Sager laptop so I don't know how high-quality their parts are. I want a sturdy, high quality machine that'll look and feel nice. From the images, the Sager's don't seem to have that...though they have an amazing price point. The ones I've looked at don't have backlit keyboards (which is fine, but is something I'd really like). They also don't seem to have mini display port/s. I realize I haven't posted this on my original post but it is something I'd like if I had the choice. Any specific recommendations (with link/s) for this?

Lastly, the Alienware m14x-r2 seems like the laptop for me. Though it's only 14", it packs everything I want. I can get it for about $1300 with the "free" xbox 360 and is currently what I plan on doing, though funds currently don't allow for it. I'll be a few weeks until I make my purchase but this is what I'm leaning towards (unless the ASUS has a backlit keyboard...or something).

Let me know what you folks think.

Sager's newer NP 9150 and 9170 have backlit keyboards, my np8130 is built really well, and feels pretty solid, but when i compare it to my all aluminum m18x it feels like a toy. But there is a major price disparity there.

I don't think you will be disapointed with the Asus G55 its also got a backlit keyboard according to this review

the m14x is a good deal with a free xbox, if you call up alienware directly and haggle a bit, you can get more off, do your homework and find coupon codes, any promos, student discounts, etc... a lot of people get a $200 giftcard plus a giftcard for 3% back or something like that.

Do you know offhand if the 9130 is the same as the 9150 but with weaker graphics cards? I wouldn't mind getting a Sager but if it costs the same as an Alienware, I'd prefer the latter.

EDIT: seems as though the 9130 does NOT have backlit keyboard :/

Yeah, thats why I didn't include it with my most recent post, its doesnt have that feature, and I forgot it didnt in my original post.

Sorry about that.

It's not weaker as much as it just comes with a lesser PSU. It comes with the 120w PSU rather than the 180w model that comes with the 9150. It's still enough, but if you wanted to overclock the GPU at all, go for the bigger PSU. Plus the bios is a bit different and it doesn't support any of the extreme intel CPUs either.

However as far as weaker, comparing it to the 9150 outright there's almost no difference.

They're better if you want a lower power drawing PC that doesn't roast your lap. However this is compensated for me by having a HUGE laptop. tongue.gif I just sit it on the desk so my crotch doesn't catch fire. XD

Also, i know for my generation the 8130 and 8150, the 30 has a plastic finish that is lightly textured where the 8150 was a rubberized grippy type finish almost. 9from descriptions) it also only supports a 75w gpu. Several people have put 100w 6970s in them, but there is always the risk it will be too much for the laptop.
