Help with $850 AMD gaming budget build. - Page 6

Hello Pioneerisloud,

I absolutely understand where you are coming from on this. The problem I see with a "low overhead" approach, is that, while 90% of people will never use the machine in a way that would present a problem, there are about 10% of us, who will stress test just for the sake of stress testing, and effectively hit peak theoretical power consumption. I'm sure the little 430W did great in that time you were using the machine, but I suspect if you had gone out of your way (as some enthusiasts will) during that time, to max out every component in the machine, for the sake of a "stress test," the 430W unit would likely have gone into protection or smoked or something. (right?)

Regards,
Eric

Honestly, no I don't think it would have. The CX430 offers 380w continuous on the 12v rail. My 7970 draws at most around 250w, and my i5 draws around 120w at most. While yes, that leaves VERY LITTLE left over, its not like the unit will flat fall on its face at 380w, it'll just start losing efficiency. It'll only USUALLY turn itself off if its far too much of an overload like say 500w instead of 380w.

I've never had a PSU overload on me though, so I'm not really an expert. I stress tested my TPN 650 with the 580 SLI and my i5 though. Fan ramped up a good bit, but it never went out of spec and it never once shut off on me. And that was with probably a solid 700-750w load on it.

Hello Pioneerisloud

I misread, and for some reason was under the impression that you were talking about running the SLI GTX580 rig on the CX430. You did point out that the machine in question was your sig rig, I just didn't make the connection. Yes, a 7970 + 2500K can run on a 450W PSU [edit: 430W whatever]. It's "pushing" it if you do any major stress test type stuff with OCing, but would be fine in most normal operation. It's not a configuration anyone should plan on running over the long haul though as I'm sure you wouldn't anyway.

Regards,
Eric

A good 650W supply will power anything that's been discussed in this thread, even a 7870 with an overclocked 8-core Bulldozer.

What I always tell people is to get whatever you think is best without being silly. You don't need a 1 KW supply for this, and never will. But you might get 18 months from now and that 7870 is getting long in the tooth, and decide to add another one for higher resolution or more FPS. I had a crap video card in this rig for the longest time (don't have the time to play games these days, so it didn't matter), but then I had the chance to put in this 3870 X2 for nothing, and I was like, "what the heck, why not?" And there's another 200W needed right there. I've added that card, switched from an X4 620 to a Thuban and added more RAM since I upgraded to a 750W power supply, and still have headroom left for more.

OP you are overspending on the cabinet. Spend on the components which will give maximum effect on performance. HD 7950 is the card you should be looking to get. HD 7950 OC (900 Mhz) is 20% faster than HD 7870(1 Ghz) at stock. The performance gap widens further if you overclock. The ASROCK motherboard supports dual x8 operation for CF . The ANTEC 900W PSU also is powerful enough for CF and comes with a 5 year warranty. The Coolermaster HAF 912 comes with 120mm front and rear fans with provision for adding two 120mm fans (outtake) at the top and one 120mm fan on the side (intake). the user reviews are very positive for this cabinet.

Good build in general but..

The 900 watt PSU is really, really, really overkill.
I personally find the HAF cases to be really ugly. You can get a bitfenix shinobi for the same price that, IMO, has better features and look much much nicer.

Note that you can get it cheaper than newegg's price. I usually see it on sale for 60$.

The PSU was intentionally chosen because AMD FX-8120 at 4.5+ Ghz speeds easily draws 200w on its own. If you voltage overclock HD 7950 it easily draws 225w power. In future if the OP adds another HD 7950 for CF you are talking about 225 x 2 + 200 = 650 .With other components the system would draw around 750w. Its better to always run at lesser load % ( power drawn as % of total rated power ). improves longevity of PSU.

As for the cabinet there is another option. ANTEC Three Hundred. sells for USD 40 after rebate. I have a ANTEC Two Hundred V2. very nice cabinet. IMO Antec builds high quality cabinets and PSUs. good reliable brand.
