[IT Lounge] AMD Goes to Debt Market to Raise $300 Million in Senior Notes

AMD announced Tuesday that it was heading to the debt market to raise $ 300 million in senior notes.

A senior note is debt issued by a business that is of the highest seniority on the issuer’s balance sheets. It is secured by collateral, and should the issuer go bankrupt this debt must be repaid. It often will fetch a higher interest rate than regular issued debt.

Senior notes should have lower interest rates. They are less risky since there is collateral and higher claims priority.

I don't know much about business and finance, but it seems AMD knows what they're doing here and hopefully they have a good long-term plan for healing some wounded parts of their company.
It also seems that they are very interested in a future involving ARM architecture.

The higher rate is specifically used to market the note(s) to investors. I understand what your saying, but the idea is to hang a bigger carrot out there, so to speak.

So not being an economist or even really knowing how to spell the word. Is this bad or good? Seems barrowing money means they are out of capital. Or maybe they just needed some extra cash for the party tonight. JK biggrin.gif

I would assume it is to raise capital, as their stocks have been on a near constant fall since about 2010, down to just over $4 a share. As well as steep losses so far this year, it just isn't looking good for them. Although they can easily turn it around, I feel, if they focus on their GPU and mobile markets, lots of many to be had there still.

The article states that AMD might use the cash for another acquisition. I wonder if maybe they're considering buying up Cyclos so that Intel doesn't have access to resonant clock mesh.

Well it would be nice if they bounced back I actually do like their GPU's.

It would be great in the future if they didn't make really stupid business decisions like waiting too long to price drop their HD 7000 series cards when Nvidia's GTX 600 series brought such strong competition.

By the time AMD finally dropped the 7970 prices to around 440ish most enthusiasts already bought a GTX 670 or GTX 680.

I think AMD felt safe at the higher price for few reasons...

1) They were the first to market, had no competition.
2) Higher amount of VRAM
3) Wider memory bus.

Even at the slightly elevated pricing the 7950/7970 is more appealing to those of us running at 1440p or higher, the extra VRAM and memory bus really tend to help out.
