[EG] Dark Souls PC Preview: The Devil's Bargain

Thread Starter
Quote:
While the frame-rate's rough edges have been filed down, you're still going to be playing at 30FPS out of the box, as widely rumoured. A graphics menu has been added in, but there are no obvious ways to raise the bar to the preferable 60FPS mark.

Dark Souls PC uses the very same 1024x720 internal framebuffer as the console versions, regardless of which resolution has been set in the menus. The option provided is for output resolution only; a simple courtesy to allow the game to play on most monitors, but the image quality will always remain the same. In short, PC gamers will very much be getting the genuine console experience here, right down to the pixel.

That's terrible, even on consoles. Especially considering Dark Souls is one of the ugliest console games out there.

But no one plays this sort of game for graphics. You're delusional if you are.

Why would they lock it? As a PC game developer (from time to time), this makes no sense to me. I see no reason why you wouldn't just let DirectX or OpenGL have a frame buffer the same size as the window it is in. There's also no reason to lock to 30fps unless they did some horrible coding that depended on frames being 0.0333 seconds long as opposed to just using a time delta from frame-to-frame.

You'll often see me stand up against people claiming everything is a console port. For example, Crysis 2 and Skyrim were NOT console ports. However, this game sounds like it is, the engine or architecture being used in the game has not been adapted well for PC. It sounds like the bare minimum was done to get this to run on PC, and that's it.

Pathetic.

Which brings me back to my original statement that people thought was stupid... If you own a PS3 you are silly to wait for the PC release. This is not a mouse and keyboard game anyway so there is virtually no advantage to playing this on PC.

Why would anyone pirate a game that will look like crap on anything other than a 15" 1024x768 monitor? I can't see buying this at full price - I think my cat marked its territory on that old CRT and I can get good...scratch that...great games with obsolete graphics for a few bucks.
