FX 8120 or i5 3570k - Page 2

Thread Starter
Ok then, i will drop eyefinity plans for now and use the money to get a dell 21.5" LED 1080p monitor. A single 7850 would be enough to handle gaming at that res. Well, i don't have a budget of any sort. I could go upto $2500 if need be. I have a good job, so money will come tongue.gif. I just wanna save every penny i can for my next quadfire gaming build using three 46" LED Tv and a custom 7.1 home theatre setup biggrin.gif. I just wanted something for the meantime (12-18 months) to experience eyefinity firsthand and decide whether its worth that much money or not. I won't be playing demanding games like BF3 or any of that sort on this rig. I will save those games for my quadfire monster. I just want to experience eyefinity using some old games like cod mw2, battlefield 2, nfs hot pursuit etc. After my new build is complete, i will convert this rig as my htpc and hook it up to my current 42" HDTV and 5.1 setup. Thus, i don't wanna buy three new expensive monitors as they will have no use when i convert this to a htpc. It may sound weird to you but what can i say, all of us have our own dreams. thumb.gif

EDIT - Please help me clear my dilemma. Single or three 1080p monitor or three 768p ones? I am leaning towards 3 768p ones as they will be easy to throw away or use somewhere else after my new build.

Since youre dropping your eyefinity plans, there's not reason to go intel. Ivy is a dead end and will offer no upgrade path while AM3+ is guaranteed to work with 3 next gen processors. That extra $90 youre gonna have to spend on an i5 platform are better invested in what REALLY MATTERS in gaming, and thats the GPU. Plus, with more and more games and programs becoming heavily multithreaded, and with windows 8 taking full advantage of the 81XX's threads, the 8120 will be more future proof that an i5. Since you're only OCing during gaming, I wouldn't be concerned about power. Remember that Ivy runs waaay hotter than Bulldozer, and that means turning up your AC. (although it would work great as a heater in the summer). With the exception of few, older and poorly coded games, Bulldozer is comparable and sometimes better than its intel counterparts.

I dont think Ivy runs WAYYY hotter, or hotter at all. Plus thats all subjective to the cooling solution and TIM used. Besides, He said he wasnt going to be playing graphic intensive games and his current GPU will be fine enough. I doubt a 7850 is worse than an nvidia 450, and I used to run a 450 on BF3 with decent settings.

Bulldozer doesnt even compare to Intel sandy\ivy parts rofl.

Edit: 1080th post tongue.gif GO FOR SINGLE 1080P!!

I'm sorry but your ivy statements are incorrect. I ran a 3570k and it isn't hotter than bulldozer. Its cooler than bulldozer which I also ran. I had a 4.9ghz 8150fx so i know about both systems. Either CPU would be good but since the op doesn't plan to oc 24/7 ivy makes even more sense since its faster ipc and normal daily tasks will be faster with ivy. Even with multi threaded stuff on cinebench my 8150 at 4.8ghz had the same score than the 3570k at 4.8ghz. With an over clock like 4.5ghz that the op would do, ivy would be running really cool with voltage in the 1.2v range

Either CPU is a good choice but if you can afford Intel its a solid choice. Amd can't touch the i7 line so the 1155socket isn't a lost cause compared to amd

Yup. AMD is even having trouble hitting the i5 2500k....
