1TB Velociraptor vs. 2TB Caviar Black

Hi,

I'm looking replace a drive which houses all of my games on my gaming PC. It's 500GB WD Caviar Blue I bought two years ago. But, capacity is a bit low, so I'm looking to expand. Anyways, I've narrowed it down to two drives: the new 1TB Velociraptor, or the 2TB Caviar Black.

The Velociraptor is $100 more, has less storage, but apparently is the fastest mechanical hard drive out there. The 2TB Caviar Black has more storage and is $100 cheaper. I'm leaning towards the 2TB Caviar Black mostly because of its storage capacity and lower price, but is there any benefit to getting the Velociraptor if the main application for this drive is gaming?

You should consider buying a 128GB SSD(approx 120USD), and then a 1TB Caviar Black/ Spinpoint F3(90USD). Thats a total of 210 USD, 50 dollars cheaper than a 1TB Veloci and the SSD is faster.

I already have two SSDs on this computer. One 40GB, one 80GB. Both are from Intel. 320 Series.

How much space do your games take up? Like above post I'd suggest ssd for games. But between the two drives above I'd go for capacity. The difference will be small to none between hard drives, especially when compared to the ssd. Caviar it is for my vote smile.gif

If you're using Intel's Rapid Storage Tech then I would get the 2tb Caviar Black. Thats what I did with mine. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD motherboard and use a 2tb black with the 20gb Intel 311 ssd that's preinstalled.

I'm still on LGA775, which means no SSD caching for me. Plus, my games take up too much space (I had a 500GB hard drive for games, so why would I fall back on my low capacity SSDs?).

Ooohhh that's right. Well get the 2TB black cause I would assume you'll upgrade in about year which would get you RST. Which will make the raptor a mut point.
