Build Plan Needed

Thread Starter
I'm going to be building a uber budget rig for my friend and need some help.

He usually just does internet browsing...that is mainly it. He has a single core 6 yr old HP PC atm that freezes and is slow as heck and is due for a update.

Budget is $550 with monitor.

Planned:

Peripherals:
$160 - Monitor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236174
Subtotal: $160

Build:
$35 - PSU - http://www.amazon.com/Antec-VP-450-Energy-Certified-Supply/dp/B004IZN3K2/ref=lh_ni_t
$20 - RAM - 4GB
$18 - DVD burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136247
$40 - Case - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005869A7K/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
$30 - HDD - One of mine.
$60 - SSD - One of mine.
Subtotal: $203

Parts Still Needed:
Motherboard -
$95 - CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106001
Subtotal: $95

Total: $

Where I am going to buy from:
Newegg or Amazon mainly, if there is a good deal somewhere else or in the marketplace I'll buy there too.

Mandatory intel?
For uber budget builds, I go APU's
Will try to help, since you definitely gave a lot of your time to OCN thumb.gif

Thanks. I was looking for doing an Intel build as I don't like messing around with AMD. tongue.gif

But, after making this list I see I don't have as much $ to play with as I thought. frown.gif

Any suggestions on a case? And more options on a AMD build?

For that $450 budget with monitor, APU seemed perfect. It was actually ZERO hassle setting it up smile.gif. The only bad thing is you can't monitor temperatures outside of BIOS yet, but in BIOS they were great under the stock cooler.

I went through the local computer store about half a year ago and went through all of their budget cases, and only one stood out. I will have to see if I can find it again through Newegg.

Other options are going up to the tri-core Llano, or the quad-core Llano while retaining the same motherboard.
Keep RAM at 1.5v @ 1600 9-9-9-24.
I believe the case was a ThermalTake. I will search for it now.

There are a few cases, and I can't seem to find the one I originally purchased. My biggest complaint was that the cheap ones felt flimsy, followed by the power button feeling like it's about to fall apart.
Here are two that sort of stand out.
Thermaltake V3 - I remember having this case in my shopping cart for a good 20 minutes. The only reason I put it back was the power button feeling questionable. It was overall a decent case. A little flimsy, not much room at the top for the fans. but not too bad for the price.
COOLER MASTER Elite 311 - I've had a pretty good time with Coolermaster cases so far. Seeing the Elite 311 in that price range (Sub $50) gives me some hope. The design looks good, as long as you guys can put up with that orange on the front rolleyes.gif
Usually my favorite way to find a case is to go to the local store and be rough with the displays. Plan on buying a small handful of thumbscrews to make life easier and the case more enjoyable to work with. (and an excuse to support FTWPC) http://ftwpc.com/small-parts/nuts-and-bolts/6-32-x-25-black-oxide-socket-cap-screw.html

The CX430 will most likely have a too-short EPS 12v 4 pin CPU power connector. you'll probably have to route it over the graphics card instead of behind the mobo

go with 1866 if the budget allows. 2x2gb should be fine. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148559

whats wrong with re-using the old case if its decent, same for any optical drive? leaves more budget for higher level apu's,

Llanos are typically over-volted at stock, even with auto settings. i've read of as low as 1.1v being fine, I'm fine at 1.23/3.0ghz but i haven't tried lower. I doubt you could pull 200w from a stock 3 core or lower even at stock volts. Even my a8 when overclocked would stay below 200w with the occt power supply test. So just about anything thats safe for the computer should work fine.

Downsize it.  An A8 APU PC can be run nicely in a low profile setup.
