Intel SSD wont play nice?

Thread Starter
Alright, so I managed to win one of the 3 SSDs off the "win an intel SSD" contest, and today it showed up. Being eager to test it, i swapped one of my drives for it, plugged it in, and booted up. Everything was fine until i attempted to do anything to the drive. Then everything just starts spitting out errors (wouldnt let me initialize, format, or read/write). I think, "Hmm, what about in another computer?" So i go and plug it into my bedside computer. Works absolutely flawlessly, allowing me to get the drive ready and then bench test it a bit. Put it back into my main rig, fails to work. Tried multiple ports, including the marvell controller ports, and absolutely nothing.

So, now im confused. Why would it just not work in my main rig and yet work fine in my bedside machine? Does it have something to do with the fact my current SSD is also a sandforce drive? or is it something else? FYI the intel drive in question is a 520 Series 120GB

Did you initialze it and format it another computer first? Also run HDtune and check for SMART errors in the working computer combo.

Did all of that, drive came up perfect. Its how i managed to get my benchmarks (speaking of which, the intel SSD apparently has 2X the random I/O performance (11.2K 4Kbyte) of the Pyro (~5.1k 4Kbyte)), as HDtune wouldnt bench an unformatted un-initialized drive.

This is very odd...

Have you updated your BIOS recently? Maybe the P5Q-E doesn't like SSDs. You will also need to install the latest iteration of Intel RST software and general intel chipset drivers.

Bios is at latest version; if it didnt like SSDs, it wouldnt accept my Patriot Pyro SSD, which uses the same brand of controller as the intel one (sandforce).
I installed both shortly after getting my OS installed onto the pyro.

Right now, since my previous install of windows is still intact on one of the drives, what im thinking about doing is swapping the pyro for the intel, and then booting up that install and see what happens.

Yes, that sounds like an good idea. Alternatively you could clone your Pyro SSD to your new Intel using Acronis.

Well, after kicking the cat off my lap, swapping the drive, setting the 500GB seagate which held my previous install as the boot drive, watching it instantly BSOD because i forgot to switch the sata ports back from AHCI to IDE, and then finally booting up, i am pleased to announce that I'm back in, and this install detects the SSD flawlessly. And if anything, the SSD has even faster I/O performance (30k 512b IOPS) vs when it was in my bedside computer (11.5k 512b IOPS).

So i really dunno whats going on with my main install.

I would download the Intel SSD Toolbox and see if there is a firmware update for it http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455

Giving this a shot now. Also, now that i have spent 3 months on an SSD, going back to a mechanical disk even temporarily is agony.

EDIT: according to the tool the drive is up to date. It should be considering its practically brand new (<5GB written + the fact i got it today)
