GPU boost difference on the same brand/type card (ASUS DCII (non top) 670 GTX)

Hello friends!

I recently brought 3 670's (one was stolen from porch frown.gif ) for my new rig, everything was working perfectly while i was over clocking until i noticed that my 2nd card kept on crashing. So i ran some bench marks with each card to see the over clocking potential when i saw that my 1st card had a higher boost clock then my 2nd. I bothers me because i bought the exact brand and type, and that the 2nd card is inferior compared to the 1st. Is there a way to unlock the boost cores ? (sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to the 600 series and what features it has) Thanks guys! thumb.gif

Yeah I feel ya man, its really weird on how the same cards can have different performance (not including a overclock) while I was digging , some users have said that there is a possibility that cards have different percentages on their gpu boost, which is fine but not when you have the same brand and type, you know.

some cards just have different kepler boosts. even when you buy the same exact brand and card. My first 670's boost was around 1110. My new 670 that I received from an RMA boosts to 1150. This without overclocks. They are/were the exact same card but still had different max boosts. I don't know if taking it back will help because it might just happen again where you get a card with a lower boost. Or who knows, maybe you'll get a new one that has a higher boost and your first one becomes the one falling behind hehe.

How far were you able to oc the cards before they started to crash?
Can you try the cards at max power % and see what the cards boost to without changing any clocks. Just the power %.
My card won't reach its max potential unless I max out the power %. When I do (at stock clocks) it boosts to 1150 in games/benchmarks. If I leave the power % at 100, my card only boosts to about 1050 range.

Also make sure temps stay below 70c or the cards will throttle back to compensate.

so does this mean my card is defective or inferior to other 670's? If I pay 1200 plus for cards, I don't expect down played card. Does nivida know about this? And why does this type of thing happen? ( remember I'm new to the 600 series, and I have done research, I'm just confused on how the same card is weaker.

Yes, nVidia 'knows', in fact they've formally addressed it and told people that it's normal and nothing to worry about. Cards in SLi don't need to be running at the same clock speed.

So, no, there's nothing wrong with your card or cards. Each individual sample of Kepler card has it's own 'Kepler Boost' value set at the factory (please see the first link in my sig for more info). Brand/Model doesn't matter in this equation, it's all about the individual chip that's on the specific card sample.

Basically there's 19 different Kepler Boost values that've been reported, every multiple of 13MHz between 0 and 234MHz have been reported on the OCN boards. So the likelihood of anyone buying two Kepler cards at random (regardless of them being the same model) and getting two that boost to the exact same max boost clock is extremely low ...

You can 'unlink' the two cards in Afterburner or Precision though and force them to run at the same clocks if you want. Just takes some simple math skills to be able to equalize them.

Yes, Nvidia knows about this. In fact, it's a feature they built into the cards. It's doesn't mean you have a defective card. Kepler takes many things into consideration to calculate the Kepler boost. The quality of the chip also players a role. You could have 10 identical cards and each one would likely have a different Kepler boost. Go look at the 670 overclocking thread. You'll see many people with the same cards have vastly different results. It's the so called silicone lottery. Some people get amazing cards that clock up really high and others get cards that don't clock up very well.

In reality, you won't notice much if any performance difference between the cards while gaming.

If I were you, I'd look at the 670 Overclock guide here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1265110/the-gtx-670-overclocking-master-guide

Find the max clock of both cards. That way you can get all possible performance out of them.

Ok awesome, I'm glad that it's nornmal and a feature set. Thanks again, and I get my 3rd card on Friday, I will post benchmarks as well. Rep+ all
