Mechanical keyboards and squeaking.

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a CM storm quickfire rapid with cherry MX red switches. I thought it was a huge waste of money but after using it for a week I absolutely love it. Unfortunately within that same week the back space key has started a very annoying squeak.

1. Does this squeak only happen with stabilized keys?

2. Do keyboards with cherry stabilizers also experience this problem?

3. If I decided to man up and attempt to grease the key myself, roughly how long would it take before I needed to lube it up again?

Thanks!

Greasing is easy, so no need to man up. As to how long it lasts... I have no idea.

My CM Quickfire Rapid with MX Browns has zero squeaks on the keys, but I do get a rattle on my space bar. Upon taking off my spacebar... it also seems like my stabilizer isn't straight anymore, might need to bend it back into alignment.

I have seen videos showing people removing costar stabilized keys and the loop that holds the metal rod looks very fragile. I would hate to destroy a $90 keyboard because it wasn't greased properly from the factory.

They look fragile but they hold up rather well, just don't pull all crazy aggressive and they'll be fine

Pull until the key pops up a little, tilt it towards the space bar, slide the stabilizer out. OR, remove surrounding keys, tip it towards USB cable, and apply grease on a q-tip or something without removing key from stabilizer. Wiggle it back and forth a bit to make sure you have a good application of grease and then put it back down

Thanks for the tips, I was being stupid, it was extremely easy. I o-ringed the entire board but I forgot to go out and buy some grease. For some reason the back space isn't squeaking anymore even though I never greased it. kookoo.gif

I got a filco and the backspace/shift key started squeaking when pressed at a certain angle.

I just went on ebay and bought some tamiya molybdenum grease that they use for model cars or something, put a tiny bit on the stabilizers and metal rods, it's been half a year and haven't had the problem come back yet. Don't think I'll need to do it again for another year or so.

One of my keys was squeaking, (not sure which KB), but after applying grease I never heard another squeak smile.gif

Ah, the smell of electronics melting in the morning!

I use a LOT of stuff. But this is cheap and easily available.

Removing them is a PieceOcake if you use this method and take it slow.
