[Mod] Steelseries Siberia V2 Cord mod

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
My Steelseries Siberia V2's have been on their last leg for a while. The mic gave out about a week ago, and the audio in the left ear died a few days later. I didn't want to buy a brand new pair of Siberias, so I decided it was time to try something new.

It was a mixture of failures that lead to their death. The volume adjuster and the Y joint at the 3.5mm plugin point. Of course, I am out of the warranty stage for my headset. Talked to Steelseries and they aren't going to help. Fair enough, I'm out of warranty.

I decided to do a mod that would place a 3.5mm jack inside the left earpiece so that I could plug in different cords.

I do not recommend doing this to your headset. This will also create problems if you want the use of your mic.
I am not responsible for any damages caused to your headset.

If this is your last hope, or you are great with audio, let's get started biggrin.gif

Things you will need
  • Soldering Iron
  • Solder
  • Heatshrink
  • Stereo audio jack
  • 3.5mm audio extender cord
  • A sad pair of Steelseries Siberia V2's

Deconstruction

Modification

This is a diagram of the inside plastic piece with the metal grill on the back. You will need to cut this piece if you want the audio jack to fit inside the headset. I cut mine along the dotted line in order to leave room for the wires.

Cut the existing cord high up and leave about 3 inches. This will give enough reach to the jack.

Solder the existing cord to the jack.
Orange = Ground
Red = Right
Green = Left

Use the existing hole that is drilled in the headset, and expand it a tad to fit the jack.

This is the exact jack I used. NOTE: my diagram on the back of the bag was incorrect. Yours may or may not be.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103452

If you want to mod something with the mic.
Blue = Ground
White shielded cable = Right

Final Product

I'm enjoying them quite a bit more. They no longer get caught on my desk, and sound fantastic.
If you are going to try this, may the odds ever be in your favor.

Nice use these with a cable with an inline mic on a phone or tablet and you would have a working headset. Not a bad idea to fix an old broken headset .

Nicely done Just recently did some thing rather similar with and old par of PC350 except i directly connected the cord to the headphones and did This mod as well.....

Unfortunately my mode was not quite as successful i'm getting a bit of bass distortion from the drivers when the sound is turned up and a bit of static.

Any idea what the problem is?

(Don't mean to steal the thead just thought i might as well ask instead of starting a new thread! cheers ) thumb.gif

I like the new cord. Mine had a similar problem at first, the bass and some of the mids sounded almost like they were underwater when I turned it up.

For me, it was the soldering of the ground wire. It was so temperamental, I actually ended up resoldering it 3 times to get it just right.

Lost this thread! couldn't find it since it was not saved to my recently posted on list blinksmiley.gif

Cheers I'll re-solder it in that case have to say i really like your mod might go of and get a 3.5 jack myself looks neat...... (They sort of look like baby Q701 with that cord smile.gif )

I did accentedly solder the drivers the wrong way around I assume this could not possible have damaged the PCB!

I intend to get some new ear pads and some pretty piece of plastic to cover that hole once i'v fix the bass issue...... thumb.gif Thanks for the help!

Cheers, Well i removed the PCB any way and added the 3.5mm jack

I was also skeptical that the PCB was the problem since i'v found them to be amazingly resilient, but was hoping it would be since it would be an easy fix) Anyway it didn't work mad.gif

I't still seems that a small amount of movement can cause the distortion of sound and make the driver's cut out - My first though after the mod was that live wires were touching the ground wire which was causing the interference and the cutting out, but that appears not to be the problem since i'v now covered all solder points with electrical tape!

The other 3 possibilities i can think of are
1. My soldering some how failed - But i'm skeptical that that's the case since I did use a fair bit of solder and striped the wires back properly, I find it had two believe that there's a faulty connection.
2. My 3.5mm jack is damage/ broken - Yet again don't think this is the case since there very simple things. (sure, excessive movement of the cord would naturally cause problems, similar to the ones that i'm having, but it occur's sometimes with the slightest movement of my head!)
3. There's something wrong with the drivers! this i suspect is the issue redface.gif guess i could open them up and check them out some time but i'm told that the driver case is glued in like white on rice!

What do you think cheers for the help thumb.gif

Worked perfectly for me. thumb.gif

No distortion or dropped signals.

I could have put the jack inside of the headphones, there was plenty of space, but I ran out of butane for my hot knife frown.gif

Great vid to learn your soldering from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw-mvlalrdQ

You don't need a fancy soldering iron. Something like this or this will work perfectly. I bought a Hakko 508 and was really happy with it because it worked for my DT990s and came with an extra tip, a small roll of solder wick, and a little stand.
