[El Reg] Party like it's 1999: CDE Unix desktop REBORN

CDE was developed about 20 years ago as a unified desktop environment for all the various forms of commercial, proprietary Unix that dominated the workstation market back then: IBM's AIX, Digital’s Tru64, HP's HP-UX, Sun's Solaris, Silicon Graphics' IRIX and on x86 hardware, SCO's UnixWare. DEC even ported it to OpenVMS, which isn't a Unix at all, and in Linux's youth there was an $80 commercial version for Red Hat Linux 4.

You didn't miss much as far as Linux goes.

Back then everybody that had a computer ran Windows on it. Only a very small circle of people used anything else and they were mostly Macintosh users. Even smaller was the Unix/Linux user base. Way too much attention was given to Windows by the devs and the other OSes like Mac OS, the Linux distros, BeOS, NeXTSTEP, OS/2 and many others were cast aside (many of which died from lack of support).

If you want to feel what it was like to have a computer in the 90s get an old PowerBook or ThinkPad and use it for a month. You will then appreciate things like protected memory!

Not really. Beyond games there's not much Windows software that isn't available for/has no equivalent on OS X or GNU/Linux. In the US, Windows' market share is down to around 85%.

Not the same! Now we have a huge Mac software selection and very dedicated Linux devs with tons of free software that rivals its paid counterparts (i.e. GIMP, Libre Office, openoffice.org,) Also, the era of beige PCs is over!
