Could this be caused by one of the drives, either the hard drive or optical drive?  I'm just grabbing at straws now.

I ran into a problem like this where it ended up my 8PIN power adapter on my motherboard literally just stopped working.

Try the PSU swap.

I has the symptoms of an Aux cable failing. But it's been running for a month, so that would be very rare. I feel we are missing something obvious for some reason

bdebrooke has a good point. You can even try using a multimeter while the system is on to check if any volts are going through the 8-pin EPS.

I'd say the next step is hooking up a known-working PSU..If it was me..I'd rip it out another rig..eh..then again..I have a Diablotek DA400 wheee.gifdevil.gif (do not use with anything like a 460) and some 350w unit I bought for $5
