I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148354 .... worked well for the few years I had it, and well now its on its way out. Pretty much when plugging it in I can only get to the root of the drive before the computer starts locking up...Explorer starts crashing... I have done Chkdsk on this thing a few times but no success.... Any ideas on how to use the last ounce of life to get files I need off it?

This could be a last resort if nothing else works,
Remove the external casing & take out the hard drive and plug it directly into a computer,
I found that removing the logic board and its SATA to USB interface & changing to a direct SATA to Internal motherboard SATA connection was enough to recover what i required file wise.
I have done this one 1x Seagate external & 2x WD externals when the logic board on them started to play up.
The casings are normally relatively easy to get into without destroying,
* DO AT OWN RISK
After i had the hdd's out of the casings i simply installed into the computer itself and booted off of " Hirens boot cd "
I than chose to start up the linux partition it offers for recovery / drive wiping etc.
*If you don't have a blank CD it's possible to make a bootable Hirens USB key very easily.
From there i could access the hard drives and i just copied what i needed onto a folder inside my OS drive.
Good luck;)

Fantastic guys!!! I will try the partition copy method.....
I have just found out my drive is still under Seagates warranty as I input the P/N and S/N on their site and it has year and half left! Will just ship this piece of junk out next week after I try to salvage my important stuff off.... LoL So I don't want to crack it open.... YET
BTW anyone know how well their customer service is? I have this gut feeling I am gonna go through hell just to get a replacement....
