So I have been having a weird issue with my onboard sound card only picking up my rear speakers if I set the audio to 7.1 surround. If I have it set to 5.1 it only gives me the option for sides but no rears. This is both in Realteks little configuration utility and the windows control panel audio config.

The solution Ive been using is just to put it as 7.1 with sides turned off, but I feel that could cause me to a lose a few sounds, in games especially, if I'm facing a slightly wrong angle. I dunno if it does or not, but does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Or to at least waylay any fears I have of losing audio?
