replacing my headset

Thread Starter
I've been using the sennheiser pc 360 for about a year, and I really like it. It's got the right amount of bass so it feels balanced. Unfortunately I've been careless with it so its starting to malfunction. I was thinking of getting another one but I have a question first. My sound is onboard, this is my motherboard http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A77TUSB3/#specifications. Would I get much of an improvement if I got a sound card, and is that headset a waste of money without one?

Yes a sound card will make a difference, is it worth it for the PC 360 imo but I would not bother getting anything that high end (say $200+ ) unless you intend to upgrade your headset in the future. That said sound much like art is hard to prices!

Btw i would send your Headphones back on warranty from my experiences most audio companies tend to generous when it come to replacing products. Otherwise post the malfunction and you may be able to fix it your self!

How much of a difference would it really be compared to my motherboard's?

The problem I have, which has developed from running my chair over the cord too many times, is the left ear not working as well as the right, and it gets worse when I use the volume control on the headset, so I have to adjust it until i get it just right.

Firstly contact Sennheiser.
The problem you are having sounds like a broken cable and (I could be wrong) Sennheiser sell replacement parts for their headsets (For my HD558 I can buy any component separately from Sennheiser : cables, drivers, ect) and I would strongly recommend doing so if you don't intend to upgrade the headset.

As for the difference a sound-card will make, it will make a world of difference. Especially for a set of cans like the PC 360.

I'm pretty nervous about buying a sound card, does which one you buy make as much of a difference as headsets? I play a lot of games but not really any competitive fps which the recommended thread mentions so I don't know if that category is necessary. Are there any other advantages to the gaming sound cards other than clear position awareness?

Looking at the recommended thread, the creative titanium HD is probably what I'd get. I play a lot of different genres of games, and I do listen to music often, can anyone confirm this as the right choice or should I be looking at something else?

I am interested in getting headphones aswell, but don't know if I should be looking for something in the gaming category. I tried a headset in the past that was supposed to be good for gaming and it was just really sharp sounding, not good at all. Is there anything that has a similar balance to the sennheiser pc 360?

Another thing about getting a sound card, the pci-e slot in my motherboard is right next to my video card, you can see it in the link I posted before. I've had temperature issues in the past and I have it a comfortable spot right now. What kind of temperature increase can I expect in my video card when adding in a sound card that close to it? Should I go for a pci slot since its further away?

Sound cards do not run hot and tend to be quite small so it should have barley any effect on your video card. Just make sure you have no major cables running right past the sound card as this can cause interference. If your that worried about heat get a DAC!

Depending whats more important to you Game sound or Music i would personally get Asus Xonar or something similar for music Or a Creative Sound Blaster for gaming, Both will give you a nice across the board improvement just are slightly better at different things.

Regarding a new headset obviously try and get the old ones replace under warranty even if you want to try something new always nice to have a back up! The only other 'high end headsets' worth it imo are the PC360 and Manufacture MMX 300 (Both are closed not open). For best bang for buck/quality just get a blue Yeti mic and HD598 or HD558 Headphones!

What do you mean when you say barely? Because when playing games my CPU is like 2 degrees below max temp.

I've read some people say the titanium hd has a lot of issues, what can I expect?

Alright well I've read up a bit more in the titanium HD and it looks like there's a lot of issues I really don't want to deal with, and several people swearing against anything from creative.

The next option I've been looking at is the asus xonar essence stx. How do these two compare for gaming though? I've seen some people say that they're meant for music and not for gaming. What are the differences besides positional cues? I have no idea what eax is really.

Do all sound cards need to be optimized because that makes me pretty nervous, I'd rather just have proper settings by default and not have to change anything like with onboard.

I really like the sound balance of my pc 360s, are there any headphones with something very similarly neutral sounding but better sound quality? Do the 360s have good sound quality in comparison to other headphones? Seems to be a lot of bad comments about them. What do the sennheiser hd 595s sound like in comparison?
