Such Thing As A PCIe Splitter / Y-Cable?

Thread Starter
Well i have a Asus Rampage iV Extreme motherboard and for those who know about it, it has a single (gray) 16x PCIe slot and i was wondering if anyone knew if there is such thing as a splitter because im looking to get 2 raid cards but i dont want to use up pci 3.0 slots for raid cards and also if the splitter is able to split evenly as in if the splitter has 2 connections each gets 8x lanes

No, it doesn't work like that. If something like that would exist, it would be 2x x4. Where would you put the cards anyway? One card would have be on the back io which wouldn't be possible because the mobo would be in the way.

Pretty much this.

I've seen PCIe extenders so you can orient it differently, but no splitter.

you can put raid cards in 4x slots, some times you have to mod the 4x slot so the back is open.

Just sounds like a bad idea for anyone to do such a thing. Sounds like it would result in endless frustration and BSODs...

This type of thing does exist.

PS: Google is your friend. And your going to be looking at server equipment as this is where that type of product would be used or in bitcoining/folding.

NVIDIA's NF200 chip also did something similar.

PCIe is packet based so the signal from multiple devices can fit down a single lane with a hardware adapter.

Now i like the device that MGF Derp posted (http://www.amfeltec.com/products/x4pcie-splitter4.php) however after reading into it a bit more the downstream from each expansion would be 1 lane so wouldnt that reduce the data transfer if i have a raid card with 4 sata hard drives connected to it?

What about a riser card that has multiple pcie slots that connects to a pcie slot? Ive tried looking for one but all i see are pcie to pci express

Check into that one or similar pci-e riser cards. Again they are designed for server enviroments and may require you to have server chipsets to use what is call pci-e bifurcation. Then again it may just work idk

Really don't bother. Odds are it won't work since RAID controllers are already so fickle. Just get a different motherboard, a bigger RAID controller, or a RAID controller that supports expanders.
