Delidding an opteron direct on die Hyper 212's?

Thread Starter
UPDATE: hyper 212's don't fit. Returned. New heatsinks don't have pipes going through it so... not a problem. So... I'll probably delid them and can let you know how that goes...

----

I thought I read somewhere that there might be a problem with putting a heatsink direct on die if it had heat pipes going through the surface. Is that the case?

I have a dual opteron workstation with Opteron 885's. I thought I would delid and put hyper 212's direct on the die (for practice and for curiousity smile.gif, but if it's going to be a problem because the heat pipes goes through the surface of the heatsink, then I'll put the IHS back on.

Obviously, there's a risk no matter what... I'm just asking if the direct contact heatpipes are guaranteed to cause problems if put directly on the die. The risk here isn't high since the CPU's are so old anyway.

If you're not bothered about them dying i'd say go ahead, why not?

But if you're doing it for temps only, you won't see that much of a difference.

Do keep us updated! thumb.gif

Thanks, but... it looks like it might not happen. Looks like Amazon might have incorrect information. I ordered
this heatsink

Which in the table under specifications, it lists socket 940. But... the instructions don't mention it, and it doesn't look like there is any way it's going work. Socket 940 has only 2 screws going through the motherboard. The mount on this obviously expects 4.

Click on the picture and go to the the middle one in the second row. Would this model work for you if you was still going to do it?

No, that doesn't support socket 940. I just ordered a pair of these:

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=AMD-AM3PLUS-COPPERFAN

Not very exciting, but it it should do the job. And it's a solid copper block which is kind of nice for trying out the direct on die thing.

Why are you delidding? It's not like Opterons run all that hot anyway.
Not worth the risks at all IMO since I doubt you'll even see any difference, tho I can imagine how cheap these chips go on ebay for, killing a couple isn't too much of a problem I guess rolleyes.gif

It's something to practice on. I'm considering delidding my 3570k at some point. I have to redo the heatsinks on these opterons anyway and after a search discovered they can be delidded in the same way as the 3570k. So... I thought it would make good practice--and on a $20 chip instead of a $200 one smile.gif

Yes, I read your thread about it. Thanks for that! Right, but the hyper anything isn't going to work for the opterons--they don't fit the socket 940. So... hypers are out of the picture. Basic heatsink for opterons... my 3570k is raystorm cooled. Not sure if/when I'll delid it. Maybe next year when I told myself I could upgrade it.
