Is water cooling an investment?

Thread Starter
Meaning that if I buy a corsair H100 now, I should be good for maybe even 10 years or more if the CPU manufacturers don't change their socket types too much? Or is it a money hole that if I buy it now, I might only get one CPU upgrade out of it before it's either not powerful enough or the socket changes completely?

Thinking of getting an H100 for my i5 760 right now, to quiet it down a bit. And then of course more overclocking if I upgrade in the future.

Sockets tend to last 3 years or so. Cooler mounting holes last longer, even 775 is still supported today. I doubt it'll last 10 years, but no one can know.

Spend 10$ more and get a XSPC rasa rs240 kit. It will last longer for sure. You could just swap the CPU block if the socket change.

I doubt a H100 will even function for that long anyways.

Corsair warranties the units for 5 years I believe.

I can attest to the fact that after working with watercooling components, They are in fact a money pit. These h100's I would recommend for a max of 3 years or so, before I started worrying about the pump.

My h100 is noisy as hell and it's only like 4 months old. Pump noise. I'm taking that piece of crap out asap for an old trusty air cooler.

I recommend you don't consider the Corsair H100.

Yup, I've been through two or three, all had a buzzing pump noise.

well I think if you looking for super longevity, you might check out the high end air cooling set ups (noctua d14, silver arrow, phanteks, ect). there is nothing that could actually go wrong with the heatsink over time (maybe dust build-up) and if a fan dies its a cheaper replace than the whole set up.

with a pair of 140mm fans, they run very quietly and perform right around what a stock h100 does. thumb.gif - but you do need a roomy case to fit them.

cant really say about the socket, I would think companies would make an updated socket kit for future platforms, but it really depends I guess.
