Is water cooling an investment? - Page 4

What exactly does a pump even sound like? Is like like an aquarium pump or is it more annoying? I could live with aquarium pump noise, low frequencies are calming instead of annoying like relatively high pitch fans.

Also... I assume a video card block is just a pit because a decent one costs well over $100 and you can't keep using them. Did I assume wrong?

pump like swiftech's mcp 655 doesnt annoy me, because i cant hear it inside my computer case. my front fan is way noisy than the pump.

It depends on the pump. Most have just relatively low hum at about ~20 dB so almost inaudible. And then you have some specifically aimed to be quiet, like Alphacool DT-LT. Unless you are going with something really overkill (or with an aquarium pump, like Eheim lower end offerings) it should be less than your average aquarium pump noise.

Videocard specific blocks are just waste of money in my opinion, although some people care about looks enough to use these. They look nice. People who like to reuse their blocks use universal GPU core blocks as that's the hot part which needs the cooling most.

Could probably just retrofit a good CPU block like people do with the pre-built, permanently contained systems, right? I wouldn't doubt that if you got a larger area CPU block you could use it for several years.

If you're constantly buying the latest and greatest GPUs and full-cover blocks, probably. OTOH once the 7000-series Radeons came out I got my 6900 block for $50 (versus $150 MSRP) from someone desperate to get rid of it.

I agree with the majority it is not an investment and it is a money pit. If you enjoy system building it is fun hobby and probably cheaper than a lot of other hobbies. I love the fact that I have really fast system in my living room and it is quiet, the components run reasonably cool and there is no noise pollution affecting other members of the family watching TV or chatting etc.

Almost everybody that uses the PC comments on how fast it is, but the thing that impresses them most.... the 27" Hazro 2560x1440 IPS monitor.

I have to put my two cents in. I have he XSPC rs240 kit on my 2700k. Originally it was on my i7 960, I just purchased an i7 3960 and it costs $4.99 to purchase the bracket to mount the water block on the 2011 socket. So is it a money pit? No. I am also running my GTX 480 0n the same loop. My system is very stable. Do I get the greatest temps? No, probably not. My wife's computer uses an H60. She runs, at idle, about 2 degrees C warmer than my system. That said, my system is also cooling the video card. I purchased the GTX480 with water block on OCN for the same price that air cooled GTX480s were selling for. Ambient temps here are in the upper 90s during summer. The system holds at about 58c with either Prime95 or Kombuster running. Doesn't seem to matter which component I tax. I am happy with that. I am actually going to pass my processor and the Rasa setup on to my wife when I go to the i7 3960 and will be purchasing the XSPC RX360 kit for myself.

So basically, those people telling you WC will only last you 3 years are simply wrong. After the initial purchase you are good to go. RASA supports a ton of socket types unless there is a drastic change in design I don't see you having a problem. The stability of being on water is addictive. I also like the H100 but I don't mind topping off my reservoir once in awhile and I like being able to expand my loop.

I'm a witness to that. The consistent footprint at least gives you a nice range of cooling options to work with. It was nice to take the cooler that was on my AM3 board and just transplant it to a socket FM1 without even thinking twice.

On topic:
Water cooling / pc enthusiast gear is a money pit. If you are trying to go long with a piece of gear, coolers don't strike me as good candidates. General peripherals do (keyboards, mice, monitors, cases) because the technology moves at a notably smaller pace and an upgrade is not necessarily THAT significant. Heck, I'm still running a 19" trinitron tube on one machine, and another has a keyboard in service that I bought from the age of the 386.

I suspect I'm a minority here, but I don't run for the latest new shiny thing constantly like I used to. It's saved me a lot of money and sanity. Both of which seem to be uncommon commodities in my world.

Hex.

If you're wanting to go that route it's better you go with a pre built Rasa kit which would make interchanging cpu blocks a no hassle deal. I wouldn't advise messing with those closed loop systems, ur gonna void ur warranty & you're not even sure if it'll function properly. A Rasa kit will def last you a couple yrs
