What's the big deal with the whole "lower power consumption" thing?

Thread Starter
Sorry if this seems like kind of a stupid question, but how come some people are obsessed with lower power consumption?
I mean, sorry if I'm completely wrong about this, computers in general surely are going to pull a lot of power either way, so why do some people care if that value is slightly more or less?
Unless it varies more than I think. wth.gif

On your electricity bill, depending what your local power company charges, yeah, it makes a difference. Move back with folks while I find a new place and bill rose about 20% from just the 2 weeks i moved in before the bill was issued. And the water heater is on a different meter so that was excluded. But yeah.

It can make a difference in your power bill if you're a 24/7 user of folding@home I imagine, heh. If I had to venture a guess, lower power consumption = lower temps = greater OC potential (if applicable)?

Computers don't pull that much power at all. Turn on a couple of lights in your house and you're using more juice than the average machine. A few years ago a highly OC'd CPU+GPU(s) combo could max out a 1000w PSU at full load, now we can comfortably SLI/CF on a SB/IB system with a 500-600w PSU. Less watts used means less heat generated. Less heat means less noise for cooling. The benefits are obvious, as well as a slightly lower power bill. Its not just about max draw, but about how well the devices idle in low power states as well. thumb.gif

1 - Power Bill!

2 - Electrical waste = heat. More power consumption means more waste heat. Less efficient power use also means more heat. Both are bad for your computer.

3 - less heat means less noise generated to cool it, and less house cooling costs in the summer / hot environments.

4 - potentially more room for overclocking.

5 - Less powerful PSU required, thus money saved on PSU cost. This is twofold if also factoring in a UPS.

6 - Better for the environment, if you care about that at all.

Ah, thanks guys, I didn't take into consideration that fact that it gives more OC potential and lower temps.
I just thought the guys were obsessed with like, 5% less power usage or something silly lol.

I guess that is a fair point, if I were paying for electric I probably would aim for less power usage even if it was a small amount.

Its a huge deal if your running a server. Those things are on 24/7 so having a processor that uses lots of power ontop of all the mechanical drives can really affect the bill.

It is the steady improvements in thermal outputs that build up over time to eventually render much higher performance for much less electricity/heat compared to older generations of technology. That is why small incremental improvements are good and should still receive praise. . And I surely can attest to the constraints that thermal output has put on me, such as when I was running crossfire 4890's with a phenom II all fully overclocked. It made the game room like an oven, when now my 7970 and 2500k can provide more performance for longer without heating up the game room as bad. It is the thermal improvements/ electrical consumption improvements that allow laptops to last longer on their battery, whilst simultaneously providing more performance. The same improvements that allow you to put your iphone into your pocket.

Don't get me wrong. I will sacrifice increasing my thermal/electrical footprint in the name of performance all day, but when I can get 1 7970 that runs more performance on 200w (vs.) Quad 4890's that run off of 1kw I will always take that plunge.

Any improvement is just that; IMPROVEMENT. And should not be taken lightly. Even a "silly" %5. Don't forget that 10 years ago you thought your PC was king of the world, now it isn't even worth $40.
