.On January 20, New Zealand police showed up in style at the mansion of flamboyant Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, swarming over the property and bringing along two police helicopters. They cut their way through locks and into the home's "panic room," where Dotcom was hiding in apparent fear of a kidnapping or robbery. They seized 18 luxury vehicles. They secured NZ$11 million in cash from bank accounts. And they grabbed a whopping 150TB of data from Dotcom's many digital devices..

Is it just me or is this a little over the top? Then again when the US Gov. is involved things always seem to go nuts. sniper.gif

It's not like he's just a regular pirate just downloading a few movies and songs, he's a guy who makes millions from pirated content he doesn't own distributed through his service.

At the moment what he does is a legal gray area (at least under US law) , but IMHO the force they used to arrest him was completely ridiculous. He's a businessman, not a Terminator.

The show of force all made sense to me once I heard the FBI had something to do with it.

Why is the FBI becoming synonymous with the excessive use of force?

The force used was definitely over the top, dogs, heli's, vans, full automatic weapons....

But yet he wasn't of enough threat to wear tact gear ( vests, etc )... but still warranted... full automatic rifles and pretty much everything else in their arsenal. If something warranted all that fire power they went in with, you'd think it would warrant ballistic vests at least.

Either way, he owns a file sharing site or "cloud" if you will. And I honestly think if he went down, then that would show the impending doom and future of Cloud Computing. Aside from giving everyone in the MPAA and every major software maker direct delete access to any file, not just their own, and recieving no DMCA notices except for one a few years back, they had nothing to go on. If he had stacks of DMCA notices piled in his trash can, sure, then he obviously has a problem. But he didn't.

And it still wouldnt warrant the kind of force and fire power they went in with. He was in his "red" room with no weapons, in plain site, and not refusing to coorperate. And he still got pistol whipped and kicked and definite amount of excesive force used.

1 regular cop would be enough to bring him in, there was no reason for fatty to resist or run.
