Picking a NAS.

Hey guys, here's a second try at choosing a NAS, this will be much more simpler.

Need something (no more than 4TB, probably 2-3TB though) that will have a simple interface and easy to use.
Must be able to be networked and then remotely accessed.
Would love it if I could somehow have locked access( so many many users, and some users can access some folders, some can't, etc).

Any ideas?

i will still recommend some of the 2 bay lower tier NAS boxes.. very simple to use and set up and very solid units. the management software and and the OS are very straight forward to use. easy setup for remote access. the guides are very easy to follow. easy to map the drive by a couple of clicks to any rig, easy to set up so it sync's with drives on your rigs.
Cons a bit expensive but here is a list you can check out of the lower tier in your price range. mind you they dont include the drives

Gotcha, I may look into those, get the entry budget one, and throw some 1.5TB drives in there.

Have the 2TB drives been deemed to be stable and rock solid?
Last thing I need is our data going down; but I may then just put two 2TB, in RAID for redundancy.

Thing holding me back from the synology is the budget, so I 'm just looking for alternatives in the meantime.

If you get a two bay, get two 3TB drives and RAID 1 them. Great read speeds and great redundancy on a budget.

That sounds like a good idea, 3TB may be the sweet spot, we'll see how much they are if I end up getting diskless..

Not to completely rule out Synology, but I see Fry's has a sale on the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo V2 Diskless for ~$105 AR, ending in about 6 days.

How would this compare?
It notates that it supports file permissions and user accounts, which is kind of key in our case.

What worries me is that feedback shows that there is very poor support with the new firmware and ARM processor., and has a high failure rate..

EDIT: What about a drobo?
I'd probably get the $400 model with 2TB drives instead of the 3TBs, and then RAID1.

Drobos are overpriced pieces of crap. You'd be better off with a FreeNAS box over a Drobo.

We got some money from the LA Film School, so we had to write up our list to get our technology up and running..

I wrote up the Drobo FS, as well as the Synology as different options.

Does anybody have any demos of the remote FTP?
I'im trying to make it as user-friendly as possible..

Ended up going for a DS212J (after much thinking).
Saw a few screenshots of the OS during accessing the NAS, seems like it'll be very easy to pickup and whatnot, so let's hope so.

Got it for $190 on the Newegg Shell Shocker, $207 shipped.
Grabbed two Caviar Reds (2TB ea) for $261 shipped.

All together was actually under budget (500), and let's hope setup will be a breeze.

Going to try and put the two 2TBs into RAID1 for redundancy ( so if one fails, we have the other there, unlikely downtime ), and hook it up to my network for now.

The biggest issue I'm facing right now, is going to be simplifying the UI for the average joe when they upload/download/view files.
