Motherboards!

Thread Starter
So, I've been thinking recently.. I've had my rig list set up for a long time now.

However, I've been hearing great things about the P5B deluxe. I'd really love to hit 3ghz on an E6300, and am now wondering if it's possible with a gigabyte S3.

Now if I have the money for it at Christmas, I'll probably go for the P5B-D, but if not, I'll have to settle for the S3, which is like a £50 difference.

What I'm wondering is, if I actually do get the amount of money, would I be better off getting the P5B-Deluxe or a better GPU? The 7300GT I'm looking at getting is a DDR3 version and is about £60 so I'd be able to stretch to around £110 if I get that extra £50. I only play a few games because of 56k but I'd like the choice to be able to play them well, and with good graphics settings.

I mainly play Guild Wars, but I occasionally play FEAR Combat and CS: S when I can be bothered.

So after all the rambling, my basic question is this: Motherboard or GPU? Which is worth it more? If I can hit close to 3ghz on an S3 then I won't bother with the P5B Deluxe.

Go for a better GPU, games are dependent on graphics than GPU and a E6300 should be more than enough for the games that you play and there's a possibility that the S3 could clock the CPU up to 3.0ghz.....

But I'd say do more research on the S3 because I don't much about it, so first investigate how it does in the overclocking department.

But I'd tell ya, for Intel systems ASUS are always on top of any other brand and the P5B Deluxe is a reassurance that 3.0ghz is feasible and also performance overall.

I agree with Nasgul. The vast majority (if not all) modern games are far more GPU limited than CPU. Dollar for dollar, a GPU upgrade will almost always pay far more dividends, for gaming, than a CPU will.

The catch - however - is that a GPU won't help you for standard apps. If you're encoding video, or doing other CPU intensive tasks more often, then a a higher CPU overclock will benefit you more.

It ultimately comes down to your priority - Games or Apps? Decide accordingly.

Whoa! Tankguys is here! off topic but can i buy a B coded e6600 from you?

Aaaaaanyway, maybe consider looking into the asus P5B-E? It is about the same price as the S3 and supposedly overclocks very well with the e6300. And about your video card, I don't know the price in the UK, but 110GBP is about 200USD right? You can get a very nice x1950pro for that price.

p5b-e might be a good choice. google about it's overclocking capabilities, however I'm sure they are great indeed.

If you are really gaming, then a better GPU might really make more of a difference. With today's applications, you don't really need an overclocked E6300. Even encoding doesn't take too long, and a decently overclocked E6300 will certainly do the trick.

The only way I can think of a real need of cpu power is when doing video filteration which can take days. For that even a 4ghz core2duo isn't enough .

Motherboard because if the games are working fine now then you'll have more flexibility later on to upgrade if you get a better mobo now
