psu broke or not?

Thread Starter
I shut my pc down awhile ago cuz i wanted to clean my case like i always do every Friday.

I decided to open my psu fan and box do i can air clean dust it and yes i have no warranty on the corsair psu cuz this is bought from a ocn member. The psu is three years old.

When removing the psu i notice u hear a rattle inside and thought maybe lost screws. After taking apart i found this. Is this part of the psu? Should i not boot my cpu or is it broke?

Pics will be up soon. Advice?

Ok, lets wait for the pic, But why would you crack it open to de-dust it? just a quick blast with the air line is fine.

Haha, That is a resistor and because you don't know what it is i'm going to assume you wont have a soldering iron or the knowledge to solder it back in. Technically you could just re-solder it and it would work fine again. Unless you know someone close with keen eye and some electronics knowledge just go buy a new power supply.

The other side of this is why it came out in the first place. solder generally melts at 180-200C so for it to be able to get that hot to melt the solder means there is something seriously wrong with the power supply anyway. (or it could just have been a cracked solder job and it fell out)

I think you should check the power supply PCB to see if it is really from your power supply. It could have come out of something else or it could have been wedged in one of the heat sinks from the factory.

and failing that i think just buy a new power supply then as it really is not worth risking your other components. It could be completely fine... but it could also smoke your other components and really ruin your day.
