A word about the HeatKiller 680 backplate and a 670 FTW

The backplate i'm question:
http://shop.watercool.de/HEATKILLER-GPU-Backplate-GTX-680/en

So I had asked in another thread whether or not the backplate was optional.. whether it actually served a purpose or was just for looks.. well the answer is that it's just for looks. In the past 2 weeks I've fried 2 GTX 670 FTW cards and couldn't figure out why.. there was no water leaks, no damage to the capacitors or anything.. i emailed another forum member who started a thread about whether a 680 waterblock fits the 670 FTW (and they do, since they're a 680 style card), but he didn't use the backplate.

Upon inspecting the back of the card, I noticed that the capacitor pins stick out through the back quite far, far enough in fact to make contact with the metal backplate accessory. That contact was causing an overload in the card, and basically frying it.. So just for everyone's reference, if you're going to use the HeatKiller GPU Backplate, use some insulating tape or something to create a barried between those pins and the backplate, else you're going to be going to the UPS store quite often until you figure it out.

and photos for fun

I'm glad not to use that Heatkiller backplate or it would have been a disaster. I got a feeling the EVGA backplate is better. I guess my feeling was right.

Could you possibly circle exactly which spots on the PCB are the issue? I have a Heatkiller block + backplate on the way, and I would like to know which areas to apply electrical tape or something similar to (on the backplate, I will not be applying tape to the PCB).

Sorry, I can't help you there. I used an EVGA backplate with the Heatkiller waterblock, not the Heatkiller backplate.

Sorry about the small picture, I'm at work so I can't take photos of my own.. but the little spot that's circled is the area that makes contact with the pins
eCLu0.jpg

And in this photo shows the top of the card...
DW7ZZ.jpg

The little things between the capacitors is what overloads and blows out..

And just to throw in there, in case anyone had this thought about it..yes i used the supplied plastic washers and installed them all correct, and didn't over-tighten everything and squish it all down..

Did you ever consider the possibility of having a deffective video card? There's lots of people using this Heatkiller waterblock with Heatkiller backplate & not having this kind of problem.

I considered it the first time. Then did a 1:1 swap with Amazon, (so got a new card), reinstalled the waterblock and backplate..double checking and triple checking that everything was secure.. installed the card in to my case, filled up the system with liquid, checked for leaks, went over everything with a fine tooth comb, turned the system on.. same thing happened. So that was the second card that blew in the same place. If it was 1 GPU that failed because of something I did, or a defective card, I'd accept that.. but after the second, I can't believe that.. then the third card, without the backplate, is working just fine. Luckily Amazon has a great RMA 1:1 system.

I'm just wondering cuz there's thousands of people already using the same Heatkiller waterblock/backplate without any problems. You could try an EVGA backplate. It's better looking I guess. You won't see those socket screw heads protruding on the Heatkiller backplate. None of this short circuit problems of yours too.

This is very true.. but are they using it on the FTW edition 670? i know it shouldn't, but maybe something is different with the capacitors on the back of that card.. i've got no idea..but the thing is just cosmetic, so it's just a word of warning for anyone who uses this setup to pay attention to it
post #10 of 16
I've seen lots of people here using the backplate on 670 without problems. The backplate is compatible with the 670.
