Didn't get a chance to this weekend mad.gif. Basement flooded but thankfully no water got remotely near any of the electronics. Next weekend I'll open up the equipment and check the capacitors to make sure they're good, and then I'll clean all the contacts and hook it up all. I'll post back and let you all know how it sounds biggrin.gif.

So I checked the amp and pre-amp today, both of them were completely pristine under the hood with even minimal dust other than the fan grill of the amp. I was very happy about this. I then went to double check on the speakers which are Altec Lansing 501 towers and saw that the foam around the woofers had basically rotted mad.gif. Also, a couple of the tweeters' domes had the fronts aluminum crumpled, but I figured I can fix that either via a vacuum or using a piece of tape. Now the question is, before I shell out money for a refoaming kit, is there any way to test the speakers to ensure everything is working before refoaming? If necessary I can provide pictures of everything, just let me know. As always appreciate all of your help guys! redface.gif

You can play music at low volume to see if there is sound coming from all the drivers, but if the domes appear to be damaged, they should be replaced.

Here is a little info on them: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?12456-my-altec-lansing-501-speakers

Yea I found that thread earlier, but upon closer inspection, when I push the cones in all of them make a scraping sound and you can also feel the scraping. Based on my research that sounds like the voice coil is either out of place or deformed, which basically means the drivers would need to be replaced. I'm not looking to throw hundreds of dollars into these speakers so I think it's about time to abandon mission and buy a set of floor-standing speakers that I could use with the hafler pre-amp/amp I already have. Any suggestions?

How much are you looking to spend?

I would say $500 max but I'd really prefer to stay around $400ish for a pair unless it's a ridiculously good deal.

There appears to be some decent speakers on your local Craigslist: http://cnj.craigslist.org/search/ela?query=speakers&srchType=A&minAsk=&maxAsk= Just watch out for "white van" speakers. Do your research first.

Since your price range is difficult for new speakers, you can check out Polk and Pioneer from Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100008225&IsNodeId=1&Description=Polk&name=Home%20Audio%20Speakers&Order=BESTMATCH

I've owned the bookshelf version of the Pioneers linked above. They sounded nice, but you may need a sub.

I really don't have the room for a seperate sub, nor would the people below me appreciate it rolleyes.gif. I don't need any form of crazy bass so I'm not really considering adding a sub. How are these?
