as seen here read this post: http://www.overclock.net/t/892583/official-amd-69xx-owners-club/3520_20#post_17532383
this was a ongoing issue for this guy as well, rma the hole nine yards as i recall, same MSI customer service issues as well

I actually told Mike at MSI if I should do that and he wholeheartedly agreed that that would be advisable, but yet says that the temps I'm experiencing is perfectly normal. If the temps were perfectly normal, why would he say to reapply the TIM? Complete double talk on MSI's part.

I have some MX-4 lying around, so maybe I'll do that and see if that helps.

@FTW 420.... The temps & fan speed you got running at the same setting as me was exactly what I would expect from the lightning. Thanks for doing the run.

I also sent an e-mail to the MSI rep linking to this thread. Hopefully he reads this and realizes that their customer service needs serious improvement. I mean no replies to e-mail for days, never anyone picking up their phones and no return calls after several voicemails. Not acceptable.

The only other RMA I ever had to do was on my EVGA GTS 250 that was two weeks out of warranty and they were absolutely great. They still issued an RMA and sent me a GTX 450 and when that turned out to be a defective card, they sent me a GTX 550Ti. Now they know how to service a customer. To top it off they did all of this within 3 weeks!!!

MSI, please please please take notes from EVGA and even if you're half as good as they are in service, it would be a HUGE improvement!!!

Sorry for the rant. +Rep to all that gave me some great input!

I was thinking of going water for my next build, but here's the problem..... It's hard as hell to get WC parts here in Hawaii... lol. High ambients all year round, if you don't have your AC running, yet the hardest place in the US to find any WC parts.... irony.

those screens, I got those w/ my Sapphire 7970. Bad card/BIOS. The replacement card did it too. Regardless of drivers, the only thing that would help was swapping BIOS, and even then it wasn't 100% stable.

Maybe it's a GTX480 Fermi chip under the hood?

Yep, 90'C is hot.

I know, right... lol.

I had 470's in SLI with OC and they never gave me crazy temps like these.

As others said, remove the cooler and add TIM (take photos). Might be the cooler isn't fixed properly.

Here's an email I got today after I hung up:

Sorry for the troubles. I understanding your frustration. Regarding your issue, the normal thermal limits on the card under full load can range from 80 to 95degree C. However if you are running the system under normal Load and temperature’s is around 80 to 90 degree C then it may have an issue with thermal. You can verify the card out, or if you wise we can issue you another RMA and have the card come in for replacement, also since this is a second time RMA we can see if advance replacement option is available for you. Please let me know. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Michael Vo |Tech Support -

MSI Computer Corp.

I don't know why he would keep insisting that 80-95C is normal?

And my response:

Mike,

I do apologize if our conversation got a little heated earlier. Please understand the frustration in buying a premium card like the 7970 Lightning for $540 and having these issues. Since I bought the card, I have only been able to use the card for 2weeks out of the 6 weeks I've had it and never without some kind of issue!

I still think the temps are too high and not normal. They may be within the thermal LIMIT, but far from normal.

I have posted in the OCN forums regarding my experience and I'll see what kind of feedback I receive.

The link is as follows: www.overclock.net/t/1292827/

I have also posted pictures of benchmarks, temp readings, my rig, my ambient temp and the condition of the card (a bit dinged up) when I got it.

If you could follow the thread and let me know your thoughts, I'd appreciate it.

Now, I was thinking that I would reapply TIM and call it a day, but Idon't know..... I sent in a brand new card and got back a card with dings and scratches. Is it right for me to request a brand new card?
