Dude. No one cares what temp your 6970 runs. Mine runs cooler than yours. Has nothing to do with OP's issue. Apples to oranges.

Seeing this thread, I'm having the same issue of overheating on my current cards. Playing skyrim, or any game which pushes the gpus to 99%, the top GPU is 74c and the bottom one is 96c. Totally fail card. Also the 96c card has been RMA'd once because of a faulty fan. The top GPU's fan is failing as I checked a few days ago and it will probably stop spinning after a few weeks. I've had both cards since 12/11

1 good thing I'd like to point out is I got the card back with the repaired fan in 1 week. I'm RMAing it today again. If they send back the same defective thing I'll definitely demand a refund.

MSI hasn't been the best experience for me. Even a 9400GT I had from MSI, its fan craped out in 6 months. But look at Sapphire's 5670 I had. 80% fan speed and NEVER went past 64c. My friend's Sapphire 6950 is on an auto profile, but even that doesn't go past 65c no matter what you do. I still have my 5670 in my other rig and it works fine.
I had to take MSI because I wanted to go nvidia, but I guess its a fail. Even after I saw all those awesome reviews of the TFII.

EVGA would be better, but it isn't available in my area, so I guess next cards I take are AMD, even though I'm an nvidia fan. Just frustrated.

I just returned x2 7950s because honestly they were junk. Now these were not Lightnings or 7970s but these were Twin Frozr III 7950s. They ran a bit hot and both ran like crap no matter what I did. One even artifacted new out of the box. MSi IMO is a terrible brand and the customer service was trash. I was going to RMA them with MSi but I ended up just doing a return with Newegg.

The MSi coolers are crap IMO. My 7970 reference does not run anywhere near as crappy or hot as my MSi's did

A bit of an update.......

I got another 7970 Lightning from MSI and there's some good news and a lot of bad news!!!

The new 7970 Lightning is a "Ghz Edition". Not sure if that means it has the new BIOS with boost enabled or what...couldn't really test that out.... see below. Anyways, it was just a sticker added on the box so it might just be marketing.... who knows.

The card runs cool like it should and I was able to complete the furmark burn in test on stock fan profiles and the card never went over 68C!!! However, there were a lot of stuttering. Fine, I thought, let me run some more benches. Well, in Heaven, I kept getting the error "Unigine fatal error: "D3D11appWindow::do_swap():device removed"" or a complete crash with the sound loop!!!

So I did a complete driver uninstall and a reinstall and same thing. Upping the voltage helped a bit and I was able to complete the Heaven bench. Now, I fire up BF3 and within a minute, I crash..... tried again....crash.... up the volts.... crash!!!!

So, since I still had the other Lightning that was overheating, I reinstalled that card and voila... it works... still runs hot, but it works!!!

I AM SO SICK OF THE LIGHTNINGS AT THIS POINT!!!!!

Do I even bother with a 3rd RMA?!?!?

I was really hopeful, since the new Lightning ran so cool, but completely unstable!!!! This is my 3rd 7970 Lighting!!!! What can I do guys?

MSIAlex, if you're on please advise!!!

hpak

just for your reference, i'll share my story, while the only difference being i'm using ASUS DC2 HD7970 TOP (factory OCed 1000) but that was before the officially GHz edition were released.

In the end i had to RMA them 4 times to get them right.

it was a cross fire setup

so the first RMA was sweet and easy, the replacement card that came back was PERFECT! in every way, not like the POS that came in the box from the store tongue.gif

but the nightmare began with the 2nd card in RMA, I had to do it 3 times to finally get a good card

like you the original cards, or actually all the bad cards will crash into those horizontal or vertical lines in 3Dmark or any heavy 3D games.

the problem behind the heat caused by the OC and the cooling not being properly mounted, or not properly done to the VRAM

there's also this thing with the NEW BIOS firmware being better optimized and properly volt-ed/clocked without getting generating additional heat

i noticed the OLD BIOS were underpowered which probably made them unstable, and there was the HSF issue with the DC2 not being properly mounted

the NEW BIOS from the new replacement cards were clocked and volt-ed adequately, and the HSF was actually doing the job it was supposed to be doing, and seems like they added HS as well over the VRAM, while before the VRAM were naked, and were just cooled by air without HS

so, the final decision is yours. if you want to risk another RMA or not

if it doesn't crash on 99% of your games and maxed out settings on 3Dmarks11 or Vantage then you should be fine

Choppiness is usually caused by something else, try 12.7 beta drivers instead

do a full swipe or clean uninstall of the old drivers first

do NOT use 12.8 drivers they are bugged to hell, even Firefox crashes on 12.8

@AllGamer

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have been on 2.7b since release and have done several clean uninstalls and reinstalls of the driver. The problem with the 3rd Lightning still persists.... runs cool, but completely unstable. The 2nd Lightning runs HOT but somewhat stable. I wish I could just get a card that just works!!!

I reinstalled the 2nd Lightning and am using it for the moment, however, I still get the occasional vert line or grey screen crashes. Also, during games like BF3, I get some weird artifacts after a while.

Anyways, I have sent in another email to MSI and will see what they say.

yup definitely something is going on with the lightning
i see those artifacts clearly on your screen shots

do you have the settings on HIGH or Ultra in BF3 ?

i'm running it on HIGH at 5760 x 2160 with crossfire with 12.7 beta
runs good and fast even on heavy fighting bombardment / explosive scenes, no artifacts

but can't get 5760x2160 to run on ULTRA, as it turns into like a slide show

I can only do Ultra on lower resolutions like 1920x1080
