what intrest me, on this note i know i have a different series of cards and coolers.

im running CFX 6850 power editions, they idly at 30C and never break 55C under load for hours at a time.

this is though, with cyclone coolers.

and i can speak positive for EVGA also, had a P55FTW mobo bite the dust, they sent me back a P55 classy 200 within a week.

Wow....That's some really good temps... Is your computer room in a walk in fridge? tongue.gif

My room has a small 5000 BTU AC but it seems normal even when its hotter in here. Right now its idling 32c.

Wow... My reference 7970 doesn't hit over 80 with a full load and an oc of 1190/1600.... The one time it hit 90 was because I forgot to change fan profiles....

Looks like the overheating culprit is from the cooler itself! Since I had both cards with me, I figured I'd do some testing. Since I had one card that would run, but overheat and another that would run cool, but was unstable, I swapped the coolers from each card...... guess what, the Lightning that was overheating now runs pretty cool and the unstable card..... well, that Lightning is now unstable and overheats...lol axesmiley.png
I've tested each card quite a bit and redid the TIM multiple times to make sure that it was the cooler that was causing the high temps.
So, right now, I have the 2nd Lightning with the cooler from the 3rd Lightning and temps are pretty good. I was able to start OC'ing the card, which I couldn't even do before and have so far gotten up to 1225 on core with volts at 1.193 with temps of around 62C during a couple hours of BF3.
I've settled on 1150 core with volts at 1.125 for now as a good balance. I'm keeping a log of my OC and will post as soon as I complete it. I've still yet to dial in the memory.
Rather than waiting for a 4th RMA, I think I'll just settle with this for now and finally enjoy my rig and get some gaming on!!!
Aloha to all of you that contributed to this thread.
Will post my OC log as soon as I complete it.

Heat pipes DO go bad. I guess you never touched your heat sink to see if it was as hot as it should be? you can buy an after market VGA cooler and have both cards.

I read one of the first posts, saying that the RMA Process is slow taking upto 3 weeks.

Yea? Well I RMA'd my HIS card, it took, THREE MONTHS! Yes, 12 Weeks for a replacement to come.

In terms of heat, they are way too high. The fact is, the 7970 is a fairly good card when it comes to heat, so with those fans settings it should stay well under 60C.

The rest of his pc has to be cool too though. the twin frozr is not a blower type, and its going to dump in the case. I have side/front intake and back/spout exhaust. I tried reversing the fans but my gpu stays just as cool. My cpu has a CM212+. Its a lot of air movement in mine and my 7970 lightning stays lower than 60c at all times.

For reference, my ambient temps have been around 25 deg C for the last few months. MB temps running about 35 deg C.
After a day of gaming my stock/reference Diamond 7970 was running at 80 deg C and needed at least 60% fan to keep it there.
If I overclocked it, that requirement went up to 80-80% fan to keep it below 85 deg C.

I put the card under water and have been happy ever since. Running the GHZ BIOS and never pass 42 deg C even under load.

Glad you figured it out. I'm disappointed how MSI handled this scenario. Sounds like they are going downhill in the customer service department?
