Anti-terrorist police stormed Kim Dotcom's mansion to search for a "Doomsday" device the FBI feared would wipe out evidence of internet piracy around the world.
The High Court at Auckland heard yesterday, during a judicial review of the police raid, that they did not find one, then for an hour left a prime target with exactly the sort of device the FBI believed could be used to set off the deletion mechanism.
No wonder they went in with such force. After all, the man was believed to have WMD-E (Weapon of Mass Deletion of Evidence)... probably deadlier than WMD for MPAA & Co.
US's agencies and their fantasy about WMD never cease to exist.
To delete all evidence of piracy wouldn't you have to delete all the pirated content as well? Impossible considering the FBI already had possession of his servers.
I feel bad knowing that our FBI forced the waste of tons of New Zealand tax payer's money on unnecessary items such as a helicopter and police bodies. They should take the entire operations cost out of the Chief's income to recuperate for it.

They aren't necessarily making it up. There are a lot of appointments in the decision-making levels of U.S. law enforcement and a lot of non-appointment positions held by people who "worked" their way up purely on political skill. Add that to the people that simply have no technical aptitude or skill, and a culture in which not being "technical" is good for your advancement prospects and you have a perfect storm of ignorance.
Of course, they also very well could be making it up, since that same perfect storm of ignorance is pretty pervasive in pretty much every aspect of government and business, so there really won't be enough people whose opinions matter that recognize it as nonsense for there to be any repercussions from the lie.
That being said, the "doomsday device" is quite imaginative enough. We have enough policy being based on irrational beliefs and imagined threats as it is. I really don't want to what else they can come up with.
I find it utterly crazy that the FBI would believe such a thing could even exist. you would have to have a device that could scan every byte of every harddrive on earth and moving electronically through the internet and kill those particles all in an instant. any virus to do such a task would be too cumbersome and slow. just goes to show you who the government believes......
An imaginary device the FBI invented to get the sort of warrant they wanted.
