Gaming/HTPC/Everyday use

Thread Starter
I've been using my Alienware from 06 with GPU/PSU/etc. upgrades for quite some time and def need a upgrade. I would love to go with a intel but I just bought a house and if I'm lucky I'll be able to build a i5 around Black Friday-Christmas time mad.gif . I need this for GW2 play plus everyday things. I just need a MOBO/CPU & Ram since all my upgraded parts (GPU/HDDS/DDrives/PSU) will come out of the ancient Alienware.

These are what I'm looking at
MOBO - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053YM70Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
or http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Sabertooth-990FX-Motherboard-DDR3/dp/B00539LU3E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1344701609&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+sabertooth+990fx
CPU - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UBNKZG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER or http://www.amazon.com/AMD-6100-6-Core-Processor-Socket/dp/B005UBNKWO/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1344701716&sr=1-4&keywords=amd+fx
RAM - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CRSM4I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Parts I have Currently
HD 7770 x2
120GB Corsair SSD(boot)
WD Black 2TB(Games)
WD Blue 1TB x2 (Videos)
WD Blue 500GB(Music)
WD Blue 500GB(Documents/etc.)
LG Blueray Writer(Primary Disc Drive)
DVD RW(Secondary/Not sure on brand, from previous comp still works 100%)
Corsair 750HX PSU
CM 690(original [sitting in my storage and still pretty])

I am looking for a decent gaming build. I've owned a i7 & plenty of intel so I KNOW AMD isn't as great, I will defiantly be going into a intel again when the time comes and I have the money, Which means this will be passed to my GF who games with me. Anyway I am not to familiar with AMD but I hear they have improved so if you guys/gals would love to help and tell me what would be more suitable for what I need?

P.S- I'm going to Fry's in about 4hours so please give your best input asap biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I would get the sabertooth mobo. The RAM looks good.

As for the CPU or the APU. You have to choose there. I think the 6100 might give better computing performance, but the APU would do well and allow you got cross fire. However, with the GPU you have that may not really matter. To make a suggestion on the CPU, I would probably do the 8120. I would highly suggest getting the 8150 though if you can swing it.

Thank you the input sadly my local frys was sold on out both 6100 and 8150's.. Maybe it's a sign to just go with the i5 I want:p So back to the drawing board and might just look for a decent intel mb at a reasonable price I guess

You're already considering a spending $270-$330 on mobo+cpu (sabertooth + 8120) and you think you can't afford Intel?

(non-overclocking ivy bridge version) i5-3550 + Crossfire-ready B75 motherboard = $290

(overclocking sandy bridge version) i5-2500k + Crossfire-ready Z77 motherboard = $301 ($281 after mail-in rebate)

you'll need a heatsink if overclocking, just like with AMD, but the non-overclocking option can use the stock cooler.
overclocking with an i5-3570k with the z77 board above would come to $355.

I realized that after I priced it out, luckily the AMD was sold out. I ordered a GA-Z77X-UD3H Gigabyte MB & i5 3570. Next month I'll be ordering a h100 so I can O.C smile.gif

If you want to overclock, make sure it was an i5-3570k. Yeah, probably just a typo, but there is a non-overclocking version.
